John David Smothers
1948-2006
HUNTINGDON: John David Smothers, age 57, died
Tuesday, March 21 at his home after a long illness.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 23, at 2:00
p.m., at Chase Funeral Home. Interment will be in
Humbles Cemetery. Brother Wayne Holmes and Brother Jerry
Hassell will officiate. Visitation will be in the Cherry
Wood Room of Chase Funeral Home, Huntingdon after 5:00
p.m. Wednesday and from 8:00 a.m. until service time on
Thursday.
Mr. Smothers was born April 30, 1948, in Huntingdon. He
was owner and an agent at Huntingdon Insurance Agency, a
member of the Huntingdon Lions Club, the Huntingdon
Masonic Lodge #106, and Mt. Zion United Methodist
Church, an avid golfer and musician.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Sellers Smothers, his
parents, Thomas Leo Smothers and Mary Belle (May)
Smothers of Huntingdon; one daughter, Anna Kathryn
Smothers of Nashville; two sons, Nathan (Deanna)
Smothers and John Eli (Jack) Smothers; two brothers,
William Lee (Linda) Smothers, and Joe Thomas (Lana)
Smothers, all of Huntingdon; and one grandson, Noah
Smothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be
made to the Carroll County Library. For more

Mildred Harder Burrow
1916-2006
MCKENZIE: Mildred Harder Burrow, 89, died Saturday,
March 18, at McKenzie Regional Hospital. The funeral
service was conducted Tuesday, March 21, at Liberty
United Methodist Church in McKenzie with the Rev. James
Smith officiating. Interment followed in Shiloh
Cemetery. Brummitt Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Mrs. Burrow was born June 15, 1916, in Carroll County,
to the late Harvey and Myrtle Cobb Harder. She was a
retired teacher at Macedonia, a former clerk at Ben
Franklin Family Center, and a member of Liberty United
Methodist Church and the McKenzie and Macedonia
Extension Homemakers Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Johnson
Burrow.
Ernest Ray Wilson
1919-2006
PARIS: Ernest Ray "Sam" Wilson, formerly of Atwood,
age 87, died Wednesday, March 15, at his residence. The
funeral service was conducted Saturday, March 18, at
Bodkin Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Blankenship
officiating. Interment followed in Oakwood Cemetery in
Milan.
Mr. Wilson was born January 29, 1919, to the late E.H.
Wilson and Callie Kate Scott. He was a veteran of World
War II, a retired employee of the Milan Army ammunition
plant and a member of First Baptist Church in Paris.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eula Jean
Belew Wilson, one brother, Bill Wilson and one sister,
Pauline Courtwright.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Dunkle Wilson; one
son, Sammy G. Wilson of Tucson, Arizona; two daughters,
Jane Wilson McInnish of Paris and Joan Wilson Nance of
Huntingdon; three brothers, Ralph Wilson of Sharon,
Gerald Wilson of Adamsville, and Bobby Joe Wilson of
Atwood; one sister, Ruth Wilson Smith of Martin, five
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

John W. Milton
1929-2006
HENRY: John W. Milton, 76, died Monday, March 13, at
Henry County Medical Center in Paris. The funeral
service was held Saturday, March 18, at Coles Chapel
C.M.E. Church in Henry with the Rev. James L. Darden Jr.
officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery in
Paris.
Mr. Milton was born May 20, 1929, in Henry, to John
Milton and Artie Mae Owens Milton, both deceased. He was
a member of Coles Chapel, C.M.E. Church, Union
Fellowship Choir, and the Masonic lodge.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Isaiah Deshaun
Milton; one sister, Pearlie Mai Tharpe; and one brother,
Fred Milton.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mamie Faye
Cunningham Milton; two sons, William (Jean) Milton of
Indianapolis, Indiana, and John Edward Milton of Henry;
four daughters, Linda Sue Walker of Rockford, Illinois,
Burnette Milton of Indianapolis, Indiana, Vanessa
(Eddie) Waymeyer of Clarksville, and Sylvia (William)
Crute of Indianapolis, Indiana; three brothers, George
(Wilma) Milton of McKenzie, James (Kimberly) Milton of
Trezevant, Eddie (Shirley) Milton of McKenzie; four
sisters, Mattie Porter of Henry, Laura B. (Charles)
Warren of Trezevant; Annie Jean (Charles) Lawrence of
McKenzie; and Peggy Henry of Henry; 13 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren, several other relatives and
friends.
Mary Lucille Beal Crocker
1924-2006
MCKENZIE: Mary Lucille Beal Crocker, 81, died
Tuesday, March 14, at McKenzie Health Care Center. The
funeral service was conducted Thursday, March 16, at
Brummitt Funeral Home with Bro. Dennis Beal officiating.
Burial followed in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. Crocker was born August 23, 1924, in Trezevant, to
the late Otto and Maxine Parker Beal. She was preceded
in death by her husband, James Guy Crocker, and one
brother, James Ralph Beal.
She is survived by one brother, Joe Beal of McKenzie.
Marvin Glen Jordan
1922-2006
HUNTINGDON: Marvin Glen Jordan, 83, died Wednesday,
March 15, at his home.
The funeral service was conducted Friday, March 17, in
the chapel of Chase Funeral Home with Bro. Fred Ward
officiating. Interment followed in the Carroll Memorial
Gardens.
Mr. Jordan was born August 10, 1922, in the Rosser
Community, to the late Jessie Lee Jordan and Nolie Ann
(Melton) Jordan. He was a retired serviceman for the
West Tennessee Public Utility District, a World War II
Army Air Corps veteran, and a member of the First
Baptist Church in Huntingdon.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Horace
Jordan, Vernon Jordan, Earl Jordan, and Leon Jordan.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Claudine (Norden)
Jordan, one daughter, Glenda (Vince) Taylor and one
granddaughter, Morgan Taylor, all of Huntingdon; three
sisters, Marjorie French and Gladys Kee, both of Camden,
and Brooxie Jordan of Nashville; two brothers, Joe Neal
Jordan of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Paul Jordan of Camden;
and several nieces and nephews.
Jane Sexton Atkins
1920-2006
MCKENZIE/NASHVILLE: Jane Sexton Atkins, 85, formerly
of McKenzie, died Thursday, March 16, at her residence.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, March 26,
at 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in
McKenzie, with the Revs. Harrell Nation and John E. Pugh
officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet
Cemetery.
Visitation will take place at Brummitt Funeral Home
Saturday, March 25, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and at
First United Methodist Church, Underwood Hall, on
Sunday, March 26, from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Mrs. Atkins was born May 1, 1920, in Murray, Kentucky,
to Jesse Dudley and Maude Whitnell Sexton, both
deceased. She was the director of music at Bethel
College from 1943-1946; choir director and organist for
several years at McKenzie First United Methodist Church,
where she was a member; and organist at First Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in McKenzie. She was a graduate of
Murray High School and Murray State College, where she
received the degree of Bachelor of Music Education. At
Murray State she was member of several music
organizations, Sigma Alpha Iota, a music fraternity for
women, and Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary education
fraternity. She was selected as the outstanding woman
graduating senior in the music department in 1941. She
received the Master of Music degree from the Cincinnati
Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a
member of the Mentor Club of McKenzie and was a former
pianist for the McKenzie Rotary Club. She was very
active in the McKenzie Methodist Church, and was an
officer in the United Methodist Women for many years,
church historian and a member of the Administration
Board. She was a member of the Memphis Conference
Commission on Archives and History and a member of the
Board of Directors of Carroll Arts. She was honored by
this organization as a "Friends of the Arts" in June
2003. She was a resident of the St. Paul Senior Living
Community in Nashville since 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wendell
Atkins, Jr., two sisters, Ruth Whitnell Sexton and Mary
Frances Sexton; and one son-in-law, John Proctor.
Survivors include one son, John (Dana) Sexton Atkins of
Nashville, one daughter, Nancy Proctor of Nashville; and
four grandchildren: Katie, Clint, and Callie Atkins and
Ryan Proctor.

Paul Junior Cole
1946-2006
BUENA VISTA: Paul Junior Cole, 59, died Friday,
March 17, at his residence.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 18, at
Bruceton Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jamie
Sprayberry and Dwayne Brown officiating. Burial followed
in Cole Cemetery, near Buena Vista.
Mr. Cole was born October 29, 1946, in Lake County, to
the late Marvin Cole and Hattie Warren Cole. He was a
Vietnam veteran and owner/manager of Cole & Sons Well
Drilling.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Marie Henson Cole;
one daughter, Christie (Dwayne) Maness of Buena Vista;
one son, Joe (Nea) Cole of Buena Vista; a sister, Kay
Luckett of Buena Vista; a brother, Freddie Cole of
Jackson; and four grandchildren. |
