Huntingdon Awarded $500,000 CDBG Grant

Gov. Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matthew Kisber recently approved more than $21 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to assist with infrastructure improvements in Tennessee.

Three area towns are receiving funds for sewer upgrades. Huntingdon has been awarded $500,000, Dresden is receiving $400,992, and Greenfield is receiving $343,843.

In Huntingdon, the funds will be used to install an automatic sampler at one of the city’s lagoons, as well as fund pipe bursting to be conducted as part of the sewer rehabilitation ongoing in the older portion of the sewer system, said Jerry Nolen, Public Works Director. The work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2008.

“I’m very pleased the state of Tennessee can provide this financial assistance to communities across the state for critical infrastructure repairs and modernizations,” Bredesen said. “The types of projects funded by Community Development Block Grants benefit and boost development at the local level and lead to the continued improvement of our state’s economic health.”

The funds were allocated under a procedure authorized by the Tennessee General Assembly. The grants were approved by the ECD Loan and Grant Committee following an application by each community.

“CDBG grants offer needed support to communities at the most basic levels of infrastructure, including well-kept roads and effective water and sewer facilities,” Kisber said. “ECD is pleased to lend its support to this program that is so essential to the progress of communities across the state.”

Allocation of CDBG funds is based on priorities set at local levels where community needs are best known. The CDBG program is administered in Tennessee by the Department of Economic and Community Development.
