HULON EDWARD WALLACE
1943-2006
MCKENZIE: Hulon Edward Wallace, 63, died Monday, January
1, at his residence. Funeral services were Thursday,
January 4, at 11 a.m. at Brummitt Funeral Home in
McKenzie with burial in New Bethel Cemetery in Henry.
Mr. Wallace was born October 27, 1943 in Martin to the
late L.C. and Stella A. Hall Wallace. He was a retired
florist from Bill's Flowers in Huntingdon.
Survivors include: two nephews, Stacy Wallace of Gleason
and J.H. Wallace of Henry; and three nieces, Angela
Savage of McKenzie, Jackie Wallace of McKenzie, and Lisa
Odle of Dresden.
TAMARA BIRCHETT
CEDAR GROVE: Tamara Birchett, 42, died Tuesday, January
2. Funeral services were Thursday, January 4, at 1 p.m.
at Reed's Chapel in Lexington with Bro. Greg Stanford
and Bro. Lynn Walker officiating. Burial followed in
Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include: her husband, Wendell Birchett; her
parents, Carl Rimmer of Cedar Grove and Patsy Wallace of
Lexington; one son, Daniel Birchett; grandmothers,
Lavelle Rimmer of Atwood and Bula Mills of Mississippi;
and two sisters, Kay (Mike) Waugh and Sabrina Gibson,
both of Lexington.
JAMES GLYNN PURVIS
1932-2006
LANSING, MICHIGAN: Glynn Purvis, 74, died Monday,
December 18 at Helen Purvis' home in Mason, Michigan,
after a three year battle with cancer.
Funeral services were Thursday, December 21 at Bethany
Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan by Pastor Richard H.
Rogers and Bro. James Hixson. Graveside services were at
Deep Dale Memorial Gardens in Lansing with full military
honors. Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Purvis was born October 8, 1932 to the late Barney
and Susie (Brown) Purvis, near Trezevant. He was
preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lloyd
and Billy Joe Purvis, and one sister, Dorothy Imogene
Woodall. He attended Argo (Cross-Eye, Rural Grade)
School in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He served his
country for three years with the Army, in Europe during
the mid 1950s as a medical supply technician. He
returned home and married Helen Boothe from Gleason. He
worked in various grocery stores before moving to Mason,
Michigan. There he worked as a Butcher working his way
up to Meat Supervisor over several stores. He retired in
1994 from L&L Food Centers and started his own
successful lawn care and landscaping business working
until a few weeks before his death. Mr. Purvis was
active in his church, serving as choir and music
director and deacon at Bethany Baptist Church.
Surviving is his wife, Helen D. Purvis; a daughter,
Teresa (Michael) Chase; one son, James Donald (Helen C.)
Purvis; one granddaughter, Taylor Chase; two
step-granddaughters, Jennie Horton and Lisa Snell, all
of Lansing, Michigan; foster daughter, Deborah Whitaker
of Nashville; sister, Mildred Smith of Chicago,
Illinois; and two brothers, Leon Purvis of McKenzie and
Jimmy Lee Purvis of Dyersburg.
CLARA WILMA BELL-WHITE
HUNTINGDON: Clara Wilma Bell-White died Tuesday,
December 19. Funeral services were Saturday, January 6,
at 1 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church in McKenzie with burial
in Humble Cemetery in Huntingdon.
Mrs. Bell-White was preceded in death by her first
husband, William Keley Bell, and her second husband,
Wardrain White.
Survivors include: one daughter, April Bint (Leo)
Abdulmalik; one niece; and a host of church and other
friends.
Baskerville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
FLOY "LOUISE" ATKINS
1916-2006
DRESDEN: Floy "Louise" Atkins, 90, died Friday, December
29, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Graveside
services were held Sunday, December 31, at 11 a.m. at
Tumbling Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. Atkins, a nurse, was born January 30, 1916 in Texas
to the late Floyd and Garnett Farmer. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Aubrey Atkins.
She is survived by one son, Glynn Atkins of Gleason.
Gallimore Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
DOROTHY L. SUGGS
1935-2006
HUNTINGDON: Dorothy L. Suggs, 71, died Friday, December
29, at Huntingdon Health and Rehab Center. The family
will have a private ceremony in Texas.
Mrs. Suggs was born March 31, 1935 in Overton, Texas.
She was a waitress and worked for GE and retired from
Home Health Care. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Fred Suggs of Arp, Texas; and one brother,
Billy Still of Kilgore.
Survivors include: three children, Bob Reynolds of Mont
Belview, TX, Lavon Carter of Arlington, TX, and Danita
Billings of Huntingdon; one sister, Helen Wade of
Henderson, TX; one brother, James Still of Houston, TX;
and two grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
BONNIE CROSSNO CURTIS
1920-2006
HUNTINGDON: Bonnie Crossno Curtis, 86, died Saturday,
December 30, at Huntingdon Health and Rehab. Funeral
services were Sunday, December 31, at 5 p.m. in the
Chapel of Dilday Funeral Home with Bro. Milton Gordon
officiating. Burial followed at Bethel Cemetery on
Monday, January 1.
Mrs. Curtis was born March 5, 1920 to the late George
and Francis Holt Williams in Greenfield. She was a
member of the Church of God of Prophecy and a retired
clerk for Fred's Dollar Store. She was preceded in death
by her husbands, Wyman Curtis and Elbert Crossno; her
children, Raymell Gardner, Linda Crossno, Eugene Crossno
and James Crossno.
Survivors include: two sons, Manual Crossno of
Huntingdon, Ray Crossno of Nashville; seven
grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and seven
great-great-grandchildren.
KATE ELIZABETH RHODES
1919-2006
HUNTINGDON: Kate Elizabeth Rhodes, 87, died Sunday,
December 31, at Life Care Center in Bruceton. Funeral
services were Tuesday, January 2, at 2 p.m. in the
Chapel of Dilday Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Davis and
Bro. Donnie Craig officiating. Burial followed in
Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Rhodes was born June 5, 1919 to the late Earnest
Lafette and Ethel Mae Melton McEwen. She was a member of
Prospect Baptist Church and a retired employee of Henry
I. Siegel. She was preceded in death by her husband,
John Earl Rhodes; three brothers, Thomas McEwen, Charles
McEwen, and Raymond McEwen; and one sister, Beulah
Jordan.
Survivors include: one son, Paul James of Nashville; two
daughters, Martha Kirby of Hollow Rock and Brenda
Bullington of Bruceton; two brothers, Kenneth McEwen and
Billy McEwen, both of Huntingdon; three sisters, Hazel
Brown, Edna Stewart and Betty Woods, all of Huntingdon;
five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
JOHNNIE LOUISE MEALS
CEDAR GROVE: Johnnie Louise Meals, 48, died Thursday,
January 4. Funeral services were Saturday, January 6,
1:00 p.m. at Reed's Chapel in Lexington with burial in
Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include: parents, William E. and Darleen Meals
of Cedar Grove and a brother, Donald E. Meals of Cedar
Grove.
WILLIAM DOYLE GREER, JR.
1945-2007
GLEASON: William Doyle Greer, Jr., 61, died January 3 at
Henry County Medical Center. Funeral services were
Friday, January 5, 2:00 p.m. at Brummitt Funeral Home of
McKenzie with burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery,
McKenzie.
He was born January 30, 1945 in Martin to Mattie Mirion
Presson Morgan and the late William Doyle Greer, Sr. He
was preceded in death by his father, William Doyle
Greer, Sr. and stepfather, James E. Morgan.
Survivors include: his mother, Mattie Mirion Presson
Morgan; three sisters, Peggy (Charles) Bailey of
Gleason, Diane (Bob) Perry of Carrollton, Kentucky, and
Raymell (Cajun) Robinson of Paris.
LEWIS EDWARD MONCRIEF
1916-2006
MCKENZIE: Lewis Edward Moncrief, 90, died December 30 at
McKenzie Regional Hospital. Funeral services were
Saturday, January 6, 11:00 a.m. at First United
Methodist Church-McKenzie with Brother Harrell Nation
officiating. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery
in Arlington, Virginia.
He was born May 22, 1916 in Bridgeton, New Jersey, to
John Moncrief and Susan Maul Frazieur Moncrief, both
deceased. He was a member of VFW Post 4939, Life Member
of the American Legion, Society of 1st Infantry
Division, 25th Division 5th Field Artillery, and WWII
Army veteran. He was a retired junior high school
teacher and retired military. He was preceded in death
by a daughter, Robin Christine Perkins.
Survivors include: wife, Ruth Totten Moncrief; three
sons, David Moncrief of Champaign, Illinois, Mike
Moncrief of Hampshire, Illinois, and Randy Moncrief of
Chaparral, New Mexico; one stepson, Richard Totten of
Bayside, New York; one step-daughter, Barbara Birnie of
Kutztown, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.
ROBERT EARL "HUCK" HAYNES
1956-2007
MCKENZIE: Robert Earl "Huck" Haynes, 50, died on January
4 at Jackson General Hospital in Jackson after a brief
illness. Services were held at Greater Enon Missionary
Baptist Church in McKenzie and burial followed in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery with Pastor James Stewart officiating.
Mr. Haynes was born January 18, 1956 in McKenzie to the
late Clint Haynes and Rosa Lee Haynes. He was preceded
in death by his father, Clint Haynes; sisters, Golina
and Betty Haynes; brothers, Clint Jr., Freddie and James
Haynes.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Haynes of Milan;
his mother, Rosa Lee Haynes of McKenzie; sisters,
Corabell and Shirley Haynes, both of McKenzie; brothers,
Glenn (Andrea) Haynes of Jackson, Kenneth Haynes of
McKenzie, John (Pamela) Thomas Haynes of Kalamazoo, MI;
Clyde Haynes of Nashville; several nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends.
Trinity Funeral Home of Paris was in charge of
arrangements.
DORIS GOODRUM MCMACKIN
1925-2007
HUNTINGDON: Doris Goodrum McMackin, 81, died January 8.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 10, at 12
noon in the Chapel of Dilday Funeral Home with burial in
Marlboro Cemetery.
Mrs. McMackin was born September 18, 1925 to the late
Joseph Hershey Goodrum and Edna Wooters Goodrum in
Leach. She was employed by the Bank of Huntingdon-Hollow
Rock Branch a few years and was a homemaker. Other than
her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Lloyd Alfred McMackin; one sister, Hazel Dewhit, and one
brother, Roy Goodrum, both of Huntingdon.
Survivors include: one son, Michael Joseph McMackin of
Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Frances Eskew of
Huntingdon; nine nieces and nephews.
PAULINE BRINKLEY
1909-2006
HUNTINGDON: Pauline Brinkley, 97, formerly of Gleason,
died Thursday, January 4, at Baptist Memorial Hospital
in Huntingdon. She was a resident of Huntingdon Health
and Rehabilitation. Funeral services were Sunday,
January 7, at 2 p.m. at Beech Springs Baptist Church
with Bro. Bob Copeland officiating. Burial followed at
Hopewell Cemetery in Gleason.
Mrs. Brinkley, daughter of the late William and George
Byrd, was born August 30, 1909 in McKenzie. She retired
from the Senior Citizens Center in Huntingdon and was
the oldest member of Beech Springs Baptist Church. She
was preceded in death by her husband, James Carlos
Brinkley; one great-grandchild; one sister, Hazel
Garner; and two brothers, Rev. Chester Byrd and Carl
Byrd.
Survivors include: one son, Marvin (Helen) Brinkley;
three daughters, Alice (Ed) Tapper, Carlyne (Baxter)
Wheatley; and Joyce (Tommy) Barksdale; 10 grandchildren,
15 great-grandchildren, and three
great-great-grandchildren.

JAMES E. LANEY, JR.
1917-2007
BENTON, ARKANSAS: James E. Laney, Jr., a long-time
resident and owner/editor of the Bowie County News in
New Boston, Texas, died January 3 at Grace Healthcare in
Benton, Arkansas. A memorial service will be held
Saturday, January 13, at Bates-Rolf Funeral Home in New
Boston. Burial will be in the Arkansas National Cemetery
in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Mr. Laney was born in Burkeburnette, Texas, January 4,
1917 to the late James and Jennie Laney, Sr. After
serving his country in WWII, he returned home to follow
in his father's footsteps editing and publishing
numerous newspapers in Texas and Tennessee including The
McKenzie Banner. He was preceded in death by two aunts,
Florence Kestler and Dixie Ezzell of McKenzie.
Survivors include: two daughters, Leah (Bryan) Terral of
Irving, Texas and Lisa (Rocky) Hodges of Benton,
Arkansas; two sons, Jackie (Sonya) Laney of New Boston,
Texas and Jodie (Joann) Laney of DeKalb Texas; numerous
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be
donated to Saline County Memorial Hospital Hospice, 1
Medical Park Dr., Benton, AR 72015.
NORMA LEE BONICELLI
1931-2007
HUNTINGDON: Norma Lee Bonicelli, 75, died Monday,
January 8, at the Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation
Center. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 10,
at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Bro.
Roger Patton officiating. Burial will follow in Carroll
Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Bonicelli was born December 8, 1931 in Yuma to the
late Felix Warren Birdwell and Mary Jo Moody Hunt. She
was a retired employee of Nissan and a member of the
First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include cousins.
