HUNTINGDON – Carroll County Commission
will consider a resolution to sell the
former Henry I. Siegel building in downtown
Trezevant. The county became the owner of
the former manufacturing facility after the
successor company to HIS failed to pay
delinquent real estate taxes.
Mayor Kenny McBride said the building is in
disrepair and contains some asbestos. One
suitor has placed $40,000 in escrow to
purchase the building and adjoining real
estate. A formal court-approved sale will be
advertised and conducted, said McBride. The
county, town of Trezevant, and the West
Carroll Special School District will receive
a share of the proceeds from the sale.
A “Victims’ Assistance Fee” of $45.00 per
conviction of a criminal court case will be
considered. The fee, if approved, will be
assessed to the perpetrator of the crime and
added to court fees with $42.00 of that fee
going to the Carl Perkins Center for the
Prevention of Child Abuse.
The resolution calls for the fee to be
collected from persons guilty of certain
criminal acts, which bears a sentence of
either $500 or more or imprisonment.
The counties of Chester, Decatur, Gibson,
Hardeman, Henderson, Lauderdale, Madison,
and Tipton have approved the new Victims’
Assistance Fee.
The county will formalize its policy
concerning the proceedings at the monthly
commission meetings. As recommended by the
Rules Committee, the meeting will no longer
be opened by a member of the Sheriff’s
Department, a non-written procedure dating
back to the time when the commission was
known as a court. Additionally, the policy
concerning the “citizen’s forum” is being
clarified. The proposed wording allows
citizens to speak a maximum of two minutes
concerning items on that evening’s agenda.
Prior to the meeting, a citizen must
register his or her name on the notepad to
speak to the commission. A maximum of 10
persons may speak during the citizen’s
forum. However, the chairman may ask
attorneys to address issues during the
commission meetings.
The inventory accounting system for county
roads and bridges will also be addressed.
McBride said the resolution calls for roads
and bridges to be added to the fixed asset
records and amortized as follows: roads - 20
years and bridges - 30 years.
Recommended appointments include:
E-911 Board of Directors – Larry Elliott and
Danny Brawner to be reappointed and Carroll
County Fire Chief Terry Bradshaw to fill the
seat being vacated by Buddy McClain, who did
not wish to be reappointed.
