Candidates Begin Qualifying for November Elections

Candidates are already preparing for the November 4 municipal elections in Carroll County. Some candidates are well ahead of the August 21 filing deadline.

In McKenzie, council members will be elected from Ward One, Ward Four and Ward Six for four-year terms, and Ward Two for a two-year term. The mayor’s next election is in November 2010.

In Ward One, Shaun T. Thompson has filed his petition to seek office for the seat now held by Wade Allen. Kenneth Hopper has picked up a petition but not yet filed it for that seat.

In Ward Two, no one has picked up a petition. The election is to fill the two-year unexpired term of the late Charles Ramey. Jerry Arthur was appointed to fill the vacancy until the November elections.

In Ward Four, Jill Holland has filed her petition to seek re-election.

In Ward Six, Jimmy Patterson has filed a petition to seek the seat. Debbie Broadbent and incumbent Darra Adkins have also picked up petitions. Adkins recently returned to the council after an eight-month absence because of health reasons.

In Huntingdon, voters will elect a mayor and four aldermen. Mayor Dale Kelley has filed his petition to seek re-election for a four-year term. Brose Park has picked up a petition by not yet filed it.

Nina Smothers and Clarence Norman have both picked up petitions to run for the at-large positions of city councilman. Norman is an incumbent while Smothers was recently appointed to fill the unexpired term of Jeanie Newman, who resigned when she moved from Huntingdon.

In Atwood, two aldermen will be elected. Ricky Long has filed his petition to run for alderman. Jimmy Halford has picked up a petition but not yet filed it.

In Bruceton and in Hollow Rock, each town will elect three aldermen. No one has picked up a petition.

In Trezevant, voters will elect a mayor and five aldermen. Three persons have picked up petitions but none has been filed. For mayor, Bobby Blaylock and Lebert “Lee” Walker have picked up petitions. For the aldermen positions, incumbents Bobby Blaylock and George E. Jennings have picked up petitions. Linda Radford, administrator of elections, said Blaylock will decide which of the two offices to seek before filing his qualifying petition.
