Early Voting Begins October 15

Early voting begins Wednesday, October 15 and continues through October 30 in the November 4 Presidential, State General Election, and local city elections.

Carroll County is a bellwether county and its majority vote has accurately reflected the presidential outcome dating back to the Kennedy-Nixon contest, in which Carroll County incorrectly went for Nixon instead of Kennedy.

In this year's Presidential Preference Primary, Carroll County went for Hillary Clinton with 1,982 votes compared to Barack Obama's 709 in the Democratic Primary. On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee received 767 votes compared to John McCain's 765.

Offices to be voted are President and Vice President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, State House of Representatives and city elections in McKenzie, Huntingdon, Bruceton, Hollow Rock, Trezevant and Atwood.

The election office, located at 625 High Street, Suite 113, is open for early voting October 15-30 from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.

People with disabilities and/or elderly persons who believe their voting place is inaccessible are encouraged to vote early or they may vote in the Election Office on election day if they notify the office in writing no later than October 25.

In Carroll County, 19,441 persons are registered voters, according to Linda Radford, elections administrator.

Candidates in city elections are as follows:

MCKENZIE - In McKenzie, councilmembers will be elected from Ward One, Ward Four and Ward Six for four-year terms, and Ward Two for a two-year term. The next mayor's election is November 2010.

Ward Six has three candidates qualified. Jimmy Patterson, Debbie Broadbent, and Adam Cooper are seeking the seat. Incumbent Darra Adkins did not seek re-election.

In Ward One, Shaun T. Thompson is uncontested for the seat now held by Wade Allen, who is not seeking re-election.

In Ward Two, Jerry Arthur is seeking election for the seat he now holds after his appointment to fill the unexpired term of the late Charles Ramey. Arthur also previously held the elective seat.

In Ward Four, Jill Holland is running unopposed for re-election.

HUNTINGDON - In Huntingdon, voters will elect a mayor and four aldermen. Mayor Dale Kelley is seeking re-election for a four-year term. Brose Park will challenge Kelley for the mayoral seat.

Seeking re-election for the four at-large seats are: incumbents Gary Hatch, Clarence Norman, Tim Tucker and Nina Smothers, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Jeanie Newman, who resigned when she moved from Huntingdon.

ATWOOD - In Atwood, two aldermen will be elected. Ricky Long and Jimmy Halford are seeking those positions.

BRUCETON - Five persons qualified for three aldermen positions in Bruceton. Incumbents Ernest Thorne and Steve T. Pinkston are seeking re-election. The other candidates include: Renee Ford, Carmion J. Fuhrman and Tonya Young.

HOLLOW ROCK - In Hollow Rock, three persons qualified for three aldermen seats. Incumbents Maria Crocker, Michael A. Smith, and Rob Woods are seeking re-election of the at-large seats.

Six persons qualified for five aldermen positions in Trezevant. Incumbents Lloyd Bateman, Bobby Blaylock, and George E. Jennings qualified for re-election. Phyllis Curtis, Eddie Granger, and Billy L. Walker complete the roster of candidates.

In the Democratic Primary, State Representative Mark Maddox (D, Dresden) is running unopposed for the two-year term for the 76th District.

For the 79th State Representative seat, Jim Ryal of Humboldt is the Democratic nominee and Curtis Halford of Dyer is the Republican nominee. The position is currently held by Chris Crider(R-Milan) who began his tenure as Milan mayor earlier this year. Crider is serving both elective positions. The district includes all of Gibson County and a portion of Carroll.

In the 75th District State Representative district, Timothy Wirgau, Republican, and incumbent Willie "Butch" Borchert, Democrat, are seeking the position. The district consists of Henry, Stewart, and Benton counties.

State Senator Roy Herron (D-Dresden) is running unopposed for the 24th Tennessee Senate District, representing Benton, Decatur, Henderson, Henry, Lake, Obion, Perry, Stewart, and Weakley counties.

U.S. Congressman John Tanner (D-Union City) is running unopposed.
