Notes From McKenzie High School

By Terry Howell
Principal, McKenzie High School

Last Thursday we held our Parent-Teacher Conference for the spring semester. We have now attended 1/4 of the time for classes for this semester so parents should have an accurate idea of their student's progress so far. Parents who attended the conference and students whose parents were unable to attend have received a detailed progress report. I encourage parents to use them as a measuring stick for the semester and make the necessary steps to maintain or improve academic progress. Forty-nine (49) percent of our freshmen parents attended; forty-seven (47) percent of our sophomore parents came; forty-three (43) percent of our junior parents attended; and forty-two (42) percent of our senior parents were in attendance. Overall forty-six (46) percent of our parents came to these important sessions.

The basketball teams completed the regular season with two district contests. On Wednesday the teams faced the West Carroll squads in a game on the road. The girls were again short-handed with the absence of Zana Carter who will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Against the Lady War Eagles, the Lady Rebels struggled offensively managing only 29 points for the game in a 70-29 loss. The Lady Rebels had trouble with pressure from the West Carroll team with numerous turnovers and an inability to score baskets. Morgan Limbaugh had 9 points for the McKenzie team. The boys' game had the excitement of a tournament game as both teams played extremely well. The halftime score of 52-38 was indicative of the offensive fire-power from both teams. Despite trailing by as many as 15 points and with nearly all starters in foul trouble, the Rebels played hard and knotted the score at 82 with less than 10 seconds remaining. After a timeout senior Derek Carr sank a 3-point shot at the buzzer for the Rebel win. Hunter Herrin played a great game with 15 points and 10 rebounds along with a strong defensive game. Tyler Holt pitched in with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Seniors Derek Carr and Shabree Payne each scored 23 points to lead a balanced attack. On Thursday, the teams closed out the regular season at home against Huntingdon. The Lady Rebels fought valiantly but fell to the Fillies by a score of 40-30. Freshman Travatia Bowden had 14 points to lead the Lady Rebels who ended the season with a 6-6 district record and 8-14 overall. The Rebels were a bit flat against the Mustangs in the nightcap. That and the stifling defense of the Mustangs led to poor offensive production as the Rebels fell 47-45. The seniors had scoring from Josh Brown (19), Derek Carr (13), and Shabree Payne (12). Although they led by 10 points midway through the third quarter, the Rebels appeared to wilt under the pressure and because of fatigue from the West Carroll game. The Rebels ended the regular season with a 9-3 district record and a 12-12 overall mark.

The district tournament started on Monday, February 11, with the girls playing against the Fillies of Huntingdon (no results available). The winner advanced to play Clarksburg at 6:00 on Thursday, February 14. In the boys' draw, the Rebels received the number one seed after a coin toss with co-champion West Carroll. The Rebels will play the Huntingdon-Big Sandy winner on Friday in the semifinals of the tournament at 6:00 P.M.

This Friday at 10:00 A.M. we will have our annual Black History Month Program in the gym. Dereck Stewart, a 1983 graduate of McKenzie High School and now an officer with he Tennessee Highway Patrol, will be our guest speaker. The program will also feature student presentations of famous Black writers, student singers, and guest performances. The public is invited to this special program. During the month we have highlighted famous Black Americans and have had quotes that have made them famous with people of all races. The Minority Council at our school is sponsoring the program and working to raise awareness of the contributions of Black Americans from the past to the present.

This week all our spring sports will begin formal practice in preparation for the opening of the season during the week of March 10-14. McKenzie High School offers students the opportunity to compete in girls' softball, baseball, soccer, and track and field. Coaches for these sports are Jessica Hardy, softball; Lynn Yarbrough, baseball; Elizabeth Gonzalez, soccer; and Bert Snow, track and field. Coaches have finalized schedules and will begin practice this week.

This Wednesday the five students who represented McKenzie High School at Youth Leadership Carroll County will attend their final session of the year. Derek Carr, Chloe Cunningham, Sarah Owen, Jordan Reid, and Hannah Scruton will receive certificates signifying the completion of their leadership-building, team-building event. Brad Hurley and Joel Washburn, our two Carroll County Chamber liaisons, do a great job in directing these students and students across the county in learning more about Carroll County and the many aspects of decision-making in our county. Kudos to them and the students involved in this worthwhile activity.

Ms. Herrin conducted the Eighth Grade Orientation last Monday in preparation for these students to prepare their 4-year plans. We plan to add an agriculture program at the high school next year and will offer a variety of classes for students to choose from. We are currently advertising the position and taking applications. Another change is in our course offerings. We will not offer world geography next year. This is primarily a staffing issue. We will continue to offer world history along with several other classes in the social studies area. We will begin pre-registration for the fall with our students on campus within the next few weeks.

School will not be in session on Monday, February 18. We will observe Presidents Day.

As always I hope everyone has a great week.
