Notes From McKenzie High School

By Terry Howell
Principal, McKenzie High School

The basketball teams began the week with a road game at Gleason. The Lady Rebels had the difficult task of playing the defending Class A Champion Lady Bulldogs in the opener. With cold shooting and turnovers, the Lady Rebels succumbed by a score of 66-33. Zana Carter was the only Lady Rebel in double figures scoring 16. The Rebels squared off against the Bulldogs in the nightcap. Despite their record, the Bulldogs played strong against the Rebels. Derek Carr had 22 points in a 53-46 win. On Tuesday the teams returned the district action hoping to position themselves for the district tournament. Although the Lady Rebels started slowly, they used a tight zone press and overall defensive intensity to conquer the Lady Red Devils 89-60. Trevatia Bowden (23 points), Zana Carter (21 points), and Morgan Limbaugh (19 points) did the bulk of the scoring in this important 13-A game. Coach Ridley allowed everyone to get significant playing time in the one-sided game. The boys' game was fiercely contested from start to finish. The Rebels would stretch the lead only to see Big Sandy make a run of their own. The Rebels had a balance of scoring with Shabree Payne (25), Derek Carr (23), Josh Brown (12), and Tyler Holt (10) all scoring in double digits.

The teams ended the long week at home against the Bruceton squads. The girls game matched the frenetic style of the visitors against the more patient Lady Rebel style. The Lady Tigers applied tremendous defensive pressure and excellent 3-point shooting to win the contest 67-47. Trevatia Bowden (17) and Morgan Limbaugh (12) led the Lady Rebel offense which suffered with the early injury of junior Zana Carter. The girls ended the week 5-5 in the district and 8-12 overall. In the boys' game the Rebels had their sight on holding on to first place in the district against the Tigers. Junior Tyler Holt played his best game of the year with 22 points and numerous rebounds. Shabree Payne and Derek Carr added 20 and 19 respectively to help the Rebels gain a 72-54 victory. The Rebels have compiled an 8-2 district record and are 9-11 overall.

We have two more games on our regular season; both are key district contests. We will play at West Carroll on Tuesday (2/5) and at home against Huntingdon on Thursday (2/7).

A reminder that Parent-Teacher Conference will be this Thursday from 3:30 - 6:00 at the high school. This is an excellent time to get progress reports and to gauge how well your child is doing for the first quarter of the semester.

We will take the Writing Assessment on Wednesday, February 6. This writing test is administered to juniors, but all students have been included in writing 5-paragraph persuasive compositions. We look for our students to score proficient or advanced on this state-mandated tests.

This week our Honors Banquet Committee will meet in preparation for the banquet and recognition ceremony on March 11. Students will need to pay attention to announcements so that they can make application to this prestigious event. The criterion is that students should have earned a 92 or above average for the spring semester of last year and the fall semester of this year. The Honors Banquet is sponsored by the McKenzie Rotary Club which also gives a $1000.00 scholarship annually at the Honors Banquet. We look forward to celebrating the academic successes of our qualifying students.

Ms. Herrin and I will conduct 8th Grade Orientation at the middle school on Monday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. All 8th graders and their parents need to attend this important meeting. After the meeting Ms. Ridley will make appointments for parents and students to meet with her to create a 4-year high school plan. The change from middle school to high school is a challenging one. Some of the major differences are factoring in number of credits to graduate, credits needed to satisfy a pathway, and sequence of classes to take. These are areas and concerns that we will address at this meeting at the middle school gym.

Last Friday, we had Senior Night prior to our game with Central High School. Senior Night gives us the opportunity to recognize the dedication and accomplishments of our senior cheerleaders and basketball players. Senior cheerleaders are Kendra Hollingsworth and Samantha Wheat. The lone senior Lady Rebel is Morgan Limbaugh. The boys' basketball team features 5 seniors: Drew Brown, Josh Brown, Derek Carr, Tyler Norris, and Shabree Payne. We applaud these student-athletes and the positive way that they have represented our school.

Seniors should have received Ms. Herrin's monthly newsletter for February by now. It is replete with information. I counted 20 scholarships/programs/competitions of interest that affect this year's class. With so many deadlines and forms to complete, students and parents need to pay close attention to the newsletter for valuable information. Also, all senior parents and students need to complete their federal income tax form so that they can also submit their FAFSA, a necessary document to submit before a college, university, or a technical school will award any financial aid, including the lottery. Call Ms. Herrin if you have any questions.

As always, I hope everyone has a great week.
