Notes From McKenzie High School

By Terry Howell
Principal, McKenzie High School

Last week four McKenzie High School football players were selected to the All State Football Team by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. Seniors Derek Carr (quarterback), Rusty Chapman (receiver), and Tyler Reeder (center) made the offensive first team. Senior John Campbell (linebacker) made the defensive first unit. These four young men along with other members of the senior class helped lead the Rebels to their first-ever Blue Cross Bowl. Along the way they won the Region 7-A title and 13 games. Congratulations to them for an outstanding season.

On Friday the basketball teams had their only game of the week against intracounty rival West Carroll. The Lady War Eagles entered the game with a good record and proved their worth in defeating the Lady Rebels by a score of 67-37. Leading scorer for the Lady Rebels was Zana Carter with 14. The Rebels also found the going tough as they succumbed to the War Eagles by a score of 65-45. The only three scorers for the Rebels were Shabree Pane with 23, Josh Brown with 12, and Tyler Holt with 10. Both teams had their district record drop to 2-2. The girls overall record is 3-6 while the boys are 3-7.

This week we have a full slate of basketball games. On Monday (1/14), we had Dresden at home on the schedule. We will play a make-up game at Bruceton on January 17 and at Huntingdon on Friday, January 18. On Saturday, the teams will return home to play Greenfield in make-up game. Come out and support our teams.

On Monday, January 21, nine of our students will attend the annual Voice of Democracy Script Writing Banquet at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars at 6:30 P.M. Those who were finalists in this year's contest include the following: Allen Akin, Max Batchelor, Midia Becerra, Kelsey Cooper, Sarah Edwards, Victoria Hampton, Hunter Herrin, Harris Laughrey, and Mary Nethaway. Placing in the top three were Allen Akin (3rd), Sarah Edwards (2nd), and Harris Laughrey (1st). This is the second consecutive year for Harris to win the local competition. He placed third in the district contest. Congratulations to these students and many thanks to the V.F.W. for once again sponsoring this wonderful event.

With the possibility of severe, inclement weather, I remind parents to check local radio and TV stations about school closing. The decision about school's closing is made at the county level. Administrators and teachers generally find out this news in the same manner as everyone else. They will not know prior to anyone else so please consult those electronic sources.

Last Friday we distributed report cards to our students for the first half of the year. We awarded a total of 1466 final grades for the first term with the following results: 448 A's (31%), 452 B's (31%), 376 C's (26%), 133 D's (9%), and 57 F's (4%). We again remind parents to look at the handbook to familiarize yourself with graduation and promotion requirements. At the high school, students are not socially promoted or advanced to the next grade without earning the necessary credits. It is also important for students to satisfy pathway requirements to graduate - university, technical, or dual.

For students who have failed a core class in math, English, science, or social studies we have available credit recovery. Students may take after school, internet-based remediation to meet the standards of the class. I will meet with students within the next week or two to apprise them of this possibility. I will also send a letter home to parents whose students qualify for credit recovery. Students must have earned at least a 60 to be accepted in Credit Recovery. Certified teaches will grade and direct students involved in the program.

Ms. Herrin has arranged a financial aid workshop for juniors and seniors and their parents. This important program will occur on Thursday, January 24, at 6:00 P.M. in the library. One of the key points will be the timely completion of the FAFSA, a federal form that all students and parents must complete to receive any type of financial aid including the lottery money. The meeting will last approximately an hour with questions and answers afterwards.

Project Graduation met last week to arrange and organize two upcoming events. They will sponsor a Womanless Beauty Review on Saturday, February 2, at 7:00. Any male McKenzie High School student or parent is eligible to participate in this fundraiser. The major fundraiser for Project Graduation, the Great Pretenders, is scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at 7:30 P.M. and Sunday, March 2, at 2:00 P.M. at the Dickey Fine Arts Building on the campus of Bethel College. Project Graduation meetings are averaging approximately 40% of the class attending. I strongly encourage seniors and parents to make a commitment to attend the meetings and to participate in the activities to fund this drug-free, alcohol-free program. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 30, at 8:15 P.M.

On Wednesday, January 23, McKenzie High School will host the All Region Banquet at the high school. As the region champions, we are pleased to have the other region schools and their honorees to attend the banquet and awards ceremony on our campus. Those receiving all-region honors this year and qualifying to attend the banquet are John Campbell (linebacker), Derek Carr (MVP), Rusty Chapman (wide receiver), Jacob Fussell (linebacker), Clint Kee (defensive back), Harris Laughrey (kicker), Tyler Moore (running back), Shabree Payne (wide receiver), Tyler Reeder (linebacker), and Austin Winsted (defensive line). Congratulations to these players for the outstanding year that they had.

School will not be in session on Monday, January 21. We will observe Martin Luther King Day.

As always, I hope everyone has a great week.
