Notes From McKenzie High School |

This Friday we will have Homecoming against
Carroll Academy. Last week the students
nominated and the M-Club selected the five
members of the royalty. They are Morgan
Limbaugh, Sarah Owen, Lesley Robertson,
Elizabeth Russell, and Samantha Wheat. We
will recognize the queen and her court
beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday. All alumni
and friends are invited to attend this
special night for our school and students.
Last Tuesday at the football banquet, we
celebrated the special year that the team
had - a 13-2 record, region championship,
and state championship game. Special awards
given to be commemorated on a perpetual
plaque are the following: David Long
Academic Award Derek Carr, Clint Kee, and
Shabree Payne; Howard Nolen Team First Award
Derek Carr; Jeff Givens Sportsmanship
Award Clint Kee; Kermit Holland 3-D Award
Tyler Reeder; J.P. Carter Inspired Player
Award John Campbell and Cory Ellis; and
the Mr. Rebel Award (MVP) Derek Carr.
Also, Mayor Winchester presented two Zenith
Awards for commitment to excellence. One
went to the football team and the other to
Derek Carr as a Mr. Football Finalist. Coach
Comer and his staff recognized each player
and class and gave several special awards
for position players.
We are offering students ACT-Prep on
Saturdays from 8-10 a.m. This is an
excellent way for students to fine tune
their test-taking skills and review material
that they may have studied earlier. We have
a number of materials for students to use
and Ms. Elam serves as the facilitator of
Time for Time. McKenzie High School offers
this as a free service to juniors and
seniors taking the ACT. The next assessment
is in February. With the possibility of
earning thousands of dollars through the
lottery, students and parents would be well
served by taking advantage of this
opportunity.
Please mark on your schedules that we will
have Parent-Teacher Conference on Thursday,
February 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Since
this is an entirely new semester with new
classes, parents need to make a special
effort to meet with their students new
teachers and get an appraisal of their
progress and work to date. Students whose
parents attend will get an extended break
for making the effort to come.
The basketball teams played at home on
Monday against the Dresden squads. Both
teams fell to the visitors. The girls could
not survive an avalanche of 3-point shots as
the Lady Lions made 15 3s and buried the
Lady Rebels 63-33. Zana Carter was the only
player for McKenzie in double digits with
13. Morgan Limbaugh added 9. For the boys
the first half was highly competitive with
the score knotted at 20. Free throw shooting
for the Rebels, however, was anemic as they
shot a mediocre 11-22. The Lions raced to a
10-point margin after three quarters and
never looked back as they defeated the home
team 61-47. Shabree Payne had 15, Derek Carr
13, and Josh Brown 10 to lead the Rebels. On
Thursday the teams traveled to Bruceton for
a make-up game with district implications.
The Lady Rebels faced waves of defensive
pressure by the Lady Tigers and dropped a
61-56 decision. The Lady Rebels were led by
Zana Carter who had 26 points. Morgan
Limbaugh added 11 points for the team. The
Rebels played their best game of the year in
downing the Tigers 88-53. Shabree Payne and
Derek Carr both had big games with 27 and 19
points respectively. The Rebels had three
other players in double figures with Tyler
Holt (12), Luke Anderson (10), and Hunter
Herrin (10). On Friday the teams stayed in
the district playing at cross-county rival
Huntingdon. The Lady Rebels again had a
nail-biter but prevailed in the end with a
45-43 victory. Zana Carter had 22 points to
lead the team while Morgan Limbaugh had 14
to contribute to the win. The boys game
mirrored the girls game not only in
closeness but in final score. The Rebels won
consecutive games with a 44-43 victory.
Derek Carr and Shabree Payne scored 18 and
17 points respectively to pace the team. The
Lady Rebels ended district play for the week
with a 3-3 record while the boys have a 4-2
district mark. On Saturday the teams played
Greenfield at home in a non-district make-up
game. The girls squared off against a young,
but talented team in the first game. The
Lady Rebels got a total team effort in
defeating the Lady Yellow Jackets 49-47. The
Lady Rebels had their usual scoring support
from Zana Carter (21) and Morgan Limbaugh
(13), but it was junior Mignon Salameh with
10 that gave the team the spark they needed
to win. The boys played their second
consecutive nail-biter in the nightcap
against the Yellow Jackets. The lead changed
hands several times in the contest, but the
visitors prevailed in the end 50-48. Shabree
Payne continued to lead the offense with 21.
Derek Carr added 11 and Josh Brown 8 in the
losing cause.
We do have a busy basketball schedule coming
up. It is as follows: Tuesday, January 22 at
Clarksburg (6:00 p.m.); Friday, January 25
vs. Carroll Academy (6:30 p.m. at home);
Saturday, January 26 at Adamsville; Monday,
January 28 at Gleason (6:00 p.m.); and
Tuesday, January 29 at Big Sandy (6:00
p.m.). Come out and support the teams.
Dallas Baker, Shakeeya Long, and Tommy Sam
will attend the UT- Martin Honors Band this
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. They will
audition for a placement in one of the
several bands and will rehearse in
preparation for a public concert on Saturday
night. The Honors Band Program brings
together high school musicians from across
West Tennessee and allows them to interact
with the professional staff of UT-Martin and
other students to motivate them to excel.
Band director Keith Breeden will accompany
the students to this event.
On January 16, Future Business Leaders of
America (FBLA) attended its regional
