Notes From McKenzie High School |

By Terry Howell
Principal, McKenzie High School |

The basketball teams had another busy week
with three games two of them district
contests. On Tuesday, the Lady Rebels
encountered the high-flying Lady Rockets of
Clarksburg. Despite balanced scoring Zana
Carter (12), Morgan Limbaugh (9), Travatia
Bowden (8), and Alex Gray (8) the Lady
Rebels fell to the home team 62-47. The team
continued to improve and played much better
against the seasoned Clarksburg unit. In the
boys contest, the Rebels looked to sweep the
Rockets for the regular season. The Rebels
started fast and never gave up the lead in
taking a 63-58 victory. The Rebels
defensive intensity against the talented
Rockets propelled them to the win as they
played a steady man-to-man that squelched
the athletic host team. Josh Brown made
several key 3-point shots to earn high
scorer distinction with 19. Hunter Herrin
and Shabree Payne both added 12. Derek Carr
helped the team effort with 10 rebounds to
go with his 8 points. Luke Anderson and
Tyler Holt scored 7 and 5 respectively to
round out the scoring.
On Friday the team stayed in the district
against the Jaguars of Carroll Academy. Both
the Lady Rebels and the Lady Jaguars had
trouble finding the range in the first
quarter as missed shots and turnovers were
the order of the day. The Lady Rebels did
manage some late scores to take a 10-0. In
the second frame the home team turned the
defensive pressure up a notch to take a 33-0
halftime lead. The Lady Rebel reserves
played the majority of the second half as
they coasted to a 70-13 win. Leading scorers
were Trevatia Bowden with 16 and Evan
Hudgins with 14. The Rebels had a strong
overall game as they defeated the Jaguars
56-24. The defense held the Jaguars to
single digits in all four quarters, and the
team had three players in double figures
Josh Brown (20), Derek Carr (11), and Tyler
Holt (11). Several younger players had
playing time in the homecoming win. On
Saturday the teams faced the Cardinals of
Adamsville. Both squads struggled
offensively and defensively as they lost by
large margins. The Lady Rebels lost 68-32.
Alex Gray had her best game of the year
scoring in double figures with 10. The boys
lost by a wider margin 88-23. Josh Brown led
the scoring with 8. This week the teams play
at Gleason on Monday (1/28) and at Big Sandy
on Tuesday (1/29). They will close the week
at home against Bruceton on Friday.
Congratulations to Morgan Limbaugh. Morgan
was crowned homecoming queen prior to the
game against Carroll Academy. Morgan, a
senior basketball player, was joined by
Sarah Owen, Lesley Robertson, Elizabeth
Russell, and Samantha Wheat on the
homecoming court.
Last week we had our final writing prompt
before the State Writing Assessment on
February 6 for our junior class. Our goal is
to have all juniors score at level 4 or
above to show proficiency or advanced
ability. We have typically scored at level 4
and have scored at above average on the
State Report Card. Since communication and
written expression are so important, we
stress this with periodic prompts across the
curriculum.
Last week approximately 33 members of our
Distributive Education Club of America (DECA)
competed in the regional meet at Union
University in Jackson. The results that we
have are as follows: Hannah Scruton/Lesley
Robertson (3rd place in role play) in
financial analysis; Chloe Cunningham/Sarah
Owen (3rd place role play) in travel and
tourism; Rusty Chapman (3rd place test);
Nick Bryant (1st place test, 2nd and 3rd
place role play) accounting; Travis
Russell (2nd test) automotive services;
Ryan Ferrell (1st test) automotive
services; Midia Becerra (3rd test)
business services; Nick Riggs (1st test)
food marketing; Chris Ventura (2nd role
play) marketing management; Keenan Bannon
(3rd role play ) restaurant and food;
Derek Carr (2nd place sales presentation)
technical sales. To date these students have
qualified for state competition: Keenan
Bannon, Nick Bryant, Rusty Chapman, Kelsey
Cooper, Josie Jarrett, Jessica Neisler,
Travis Russell, Chris Ventura, and Samantha
Wheat. The students will attend the State
Competition in Nashville on March 6-8.
On Thursday, January 31, Ms. Anderson will
meet with any student and their parents
interested in going to Europe in the summer
of 2009. The trip will center on Greece and
Italy and will have a cruise built into the
package. While this event is not one that is
school-related, it will be a great education
experience for anyone interest in cultural
travel. The meeting is scheduled for 6:00
P.M. in the library.
Ms. Herrin has rescheduled the financial aid
workshop to this Thursday at 6:00 P.M. in
the Theater. Ms. Laura Bateman from Bethel
College will be the guest presenter. She
will explain to parents and students the
various paperwork that must be completed
before students may receive financial aid.
Much of this is now done online so everyone
would benefit from the expertise of Ms.
Bateman. Also, Ms. Herrin will emphasize the
prompt submission of the FAFSA, a necessary
form that must be submitted to the federal
government before any aid is awarded
including the Hope Scholarship (lottery
money). For the next several months students
and parents will need to read the Senior
Newsletter closely and aggressively apply
for the scholarships available. Colleges and
universities typically look at four areas of
a high school students life in granting
scholarships in this order: scores on
standardized tests (ACT and SAT), community
service, extracurricular activities in high
school, and grade point average. Seniors
need current resumιs to submit with
scholarship applications. Ms. Bateman and
Ms. Herrin will discuss these items and much
more on January 31 at 6:00 P.M. in the
Theater.
This Saturday, February 2, Project
Graduation will sponsor a Womanless Beauty
Review at the high school at 7:00 P.M. This
pageant will feature several beauties from
the high school and some brave adults in the
community. All proceeds will go toward the
drug-free, alcohol-free celebration after
graduation on May 18. The price of admission
is $5.00.
Parents, please mark on your calendar
February 7. We will have Parent-Teacher
Conferences that day from 3:30-6:00 P.M.
These are of equal importance to the first
semester since students are taking all new
classes with all new teachers. This day also
is approximately the Ό mark in the semester
so teachers have enough data to apprise
parents of the progress of their students.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are not just an
elementary or middle school activity, but
are just as integral, if not more so, at the
high school level. I solicit your attendance
and support.
As always, I hope everyone has a great week.
