JACKSON (March 27) — During SportsPlus Classic high school baseball action, the McKenzie Rebels utilized the powerful hitting of Derek Carr (3-4, 4 RBI), Drew Brown (3-4, double) and blistering pitching of Parker Jones (11 strikeouts) to ground the high-flying Southside Hawks (9-1) on their home field.

McKenzie scored one run in the top of the first as Carr belted a sacrifice RBI to score Rebel base runner Mark Newman.

Southside responded by scoring one run to tie the contest at 1-all in the bottom of the second.

Following a scoreless second inning, McKenzie reclaimed the lead as Jones ripped an RBI single to score Carr and give the Rebels a narrow 2-1 lead.

Holding the Hawks scoreless in the bottom of the third, McKenzie’s Carr smacked a RBI double to help his team build a 4-1 lead.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Jones shut down the Hawks in the top of the fifth as McKenzie continued to lead 4-1.

The Rebels loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to score.

Southside battled back to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the Rebel lead, 4-3.

Rebel’s Carr and Luke Anderson ripped RBI doubles in the top of the sixth inning to widen McKenzie’s lead, 7-3.

Southside scored one run in their final at-bat before Rebel hurler Chappell fanned three Hawks to earn his team an impressive 7-3 win.

The loss dropped the Hawks record to 10-2.
