Tigers Rebound From War Eagles Comeback Victory, 14-3

(Atwood - April 22) The visiting Tigers of Central High came to West Carroll one night after a bitter loss in which they gave up eight runs in the seventh inning to give the War Eagles a stunning comeback victory.

This District 13A rematch began with an offensive onslaught from the Tigers. Jarret Watson led off the first inning with a double. Ethan Lee was hit with a pitch bringing Nick Bryant up to hit a 2 RBI double, giving Central an early 2-0 lead. Chad Jordan was up next and hit a homerun into left field, scoring two runs and extending the Tiger lead to 4-0. Bubba Matlock connected on a single before Billy Stevens struck out. Dylan Casteel hit a single and Will Roberts drove Matlock home with a single to bring the score to 5-0. Roberts attempted to steal second just as starting War Eagle pitcher Jeremy Blackwell threw a strikeout and was tagged out to retire the side.

Blackwell was hit with a pitch to begin the bottom of the first, then stole second base. Brandon Luther was struck out by Central's starting pitcher for West Carroll's first out. After Blackwell stole third due to an error, Barry Moore hit a sacrifice RBI to narrow the lead to 5-1. Brett Singleton was hit with a pitch before Clint McClain struck out to end the first inning.

Watson walked to begin the second inning as Lee followed with a single. Blackwell was down in the count three-oh against Bryant before throwing three consecutive strikes for Central's first out. He then struck out Jordan before intentionally walking Matlock to load the bases. With two outs and the bases loaded, Billy Stevens hammered a grand slam into deep centerfield to widen the lead, 9-1.The War Eagles brought up Jon-Marc Gowan for relief thereafter. Casteel hit a single and Roberts hit a pop-up to close the top of the second inning.

Cody Nelson hit a single for the War Eagles, before stealing second. Dalton Dunn walked and Tyler Nelson hit an RBI single to narrow the lead 9-2. Gowan hit a shallow single down the third base line and Nelson was thrown out at second. Dunn was tagged out in a run-down between third and home. With two outs Gowan was caught with too much of a lead and thrown out at first to retire the side.

Gowan walked Central's first batter of the third inning and Watson hit a single. Each stole a base before Lee walked to load the bases with no outs. Bryant ripped a single RBI, extending the lead to 10-2, as Watson was thrown out at third. Jordan struckout and Matlock hit a pop-up to retire the side.

West Carroll sent three up and three down to end the third inning.

The Tigers began the fourth inning with a walk by Stevens. After Stevens stole second base, Gowan struckout Casteel. Stevens made it to third on an error and Roberts hit a single. Roberts stole second before Gowan struckout the next batter. Watson hit a pop-up, leaving two in scoring position and ending the top of the fourth.

Singleton had the only hit of the fourth for the War Eagles, as two others grounded out and one struck out.

Lee hit a single to start the fifth inning, before stealing second. Bryant hit a pop-up and Jordan made contact with a single. Matlock struck out and Stevens hit a pop-up to retire the side.

The War Eagles sent three up and three down to end the fifth inning.

Central sent three up and three down in the top of the sixth.

Jacob Cunningham struckout for West Carroll's first out in the bottom of the sixth and Ryne Woods popped-up for their second. Naylor Cryer was walked and scored on Clint McClain's triple, cutting the lead to 10-3. Nelson grounded out to retire the side.

Central began the seventh inning with a double from Watson, followed by a RBI double from Lee, extending the lead 11-3. Bryant hit a single before Jordan hit a pop-up for the first Tiger out of the inning. Matlock walked to load the bases. Stevens drove home Lee with a single, extending the lead 12-3. Caleb Hollingsworth struck out before back-to-back RBI singles increased Central's lead to 14-3. Watson grounded out to end the top of the seventh.

West Carroll managed to load the bases with one out, but Cunningham and Woods struck out to end the game and give Central a 14-3 road victory.
