MCKENZIE (April 7) — In District 13A
softball action, the McKenzie Lady Rebels
utilized solid hitting and the strong
pitching of freshman Crystal Doub to defeat
the West Carroll Lady War Eagles 13-3 in
five innings.
West Carroll threatened in the top of the
first as Morgan Woodard led off with a
single to left field. Whitney Foster
advanced Woodard to second base with a
sacrifice fly to right. Woodard, despite
crossing home, was called out due to tagging
up and racing for home before Robertson’s
pop up was caught by the Lady Rebel
shortstop. After fielding the fly ball, the
shortstop threw the ball to third to retire
the side.
McKenzie went three-up, three-down in the
bottom of the first as Lady Rebel Evan
Hudgins ground out to second and Lady War
Eagle pitcher Woodard fanned Kate Barcroft
and Tenisha Carey.

Lady Rebel Travatia Bowden slides safely
across home plate to score McKenzie’s first
run against West Carroll.
West Carroll came out swinging in the top of
the second as Rachel Simko singled to short
right. Following Brittany Luther’s fly-out
to center, Lady War Eagle Misty Garmany
ripped a single through the gap between
first and second to advance Simko to second
base. Following a single that loaded the
bases with one out, Lady War Eagle Abby Reed
struck out and Emily Hall flew out to first
to end the West Carroll threat as the score
remained tied, 0-0.
McKenzie responded offensively in the bottom
of the second as Travatia Bowden singled and
stole second. Bowden attempted to advance to
third after Mignon Salameh hit a short
grounder in front of home plate and reached
first. Alertly, West Carroll pitcher Woodard
scooped up the ball and fired it to third,
forcing Bowden to race back to second,
barely avoiding being tagged out. Lady Rebel
Kelsie Poore struck out for the first out.
Colby Prosser walked ands was replaced by
substitute base runner Kelsey Carr.
With the bases loaded and one out, Doub
aided her pitching cause by smacking a
two-run RBI double to right center to score
Bowden and Salameh and give the Lady Rebels
a 2-0 lead. McKenzie’s next batter,
Robertson, ripped a single past second to
score Carr and Doub and extend the Lady
Rebel lead to 4-0. Lady War Eagle Woodard
dug in and forced Hudgins to ground out to
short and struck out Barcroft to strand
runners on second and third and end the Lady
Rebel threat.
Woodard singled to left in the top of the
third for West Carroll. Following Woodard’s
stealing second base, Foster flew out to
second for the first out. Caitlin Inman
followed by grounding out to short and
advancing Woodard to third. Simko ended the
Lady War Eagle threat by grounding out to
the pitcher.
McKenzie, leading 4-0, placed base runners
on first and second but were unable to score
in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, Lady War Eagle
Luther flew out to right and Garmany ground
out to third for the second out. Reed
singled through the gap in second to place
base runners on first and second. West
Carroll batter Hall reached base after
hitting a short grounder in front of home
plate and outrunning Lady Rebel pitcher
Doub’s throw to first. With bases loaded and
two out, Woodard popped out to second to end
the threat as West Carroll continued to
trail the Lady Rebels, 4-0.
McKenzie opened up offensively in the bottom
of the fourth as Doub smashed a triple and
scored via a Robertson RBI single to left.
Hudgins hit a sacrifice RBI ground out to
second to score Robertson and extend the
Lady Rebel lead to 6-0. Barcroft, reaching
first on a throwing error after hitting an
infield grounder, raced around second and
slid safely into third as Hudgins scored.
Cary responded by ripping a double past
third to score Barcroft and widen the Lady
Rebel lead to 7-0. Bowden walked and stole
second before Salameh hit a sacrifice RBI to
center to score Carey. Lady Rebel Poore
ground out to end the inning as McKenzie
extended their lead to 8-0.
West Carroll battled back in the top of the
fifth as Foster and Inman singled to center
to place runners on first and second with no
outs. Following Simko’s fly-out to second,
Luther advanced to first after hitting a
sharp infield two-hopper and forcing out
Inman at third. With two out, Lady War Eagle
Garmany bounced a towering three-run homer
off the top of the scoreboard in
dead-centerfield to narrow the Lady Rebel
lead to 8-3. West Carroll placed runners on
first and second before Hall struck out
swinging to end the Lady War Eagle threat
and retire the side.
Leading 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth,
McKenzie batter Courtney Jowers ground out
to first and Doub struck out swinging. With
two out, Lady Rebel Robertson doubled to
right, stole second and stole home on a bad
throw to increase McKenzie’s lead to 9-3.
Hudgins, awarded first after being hit by a
pitch, advanced to second following a
Barcroft single. Carey pounded a RBI double
to right to score Hudgins and Barcroft and
widen the Lady Rebel lead to 11-3. Following
Bowden’s walk, Carey stole third and scored
after a bad throw to give McKenzie a 12-3
lead. Referees invoked the 10-run mercy rule
after Salameh ripped a triple to left center
to score Bowden and earn the Lady Rebels a
13-3 win. |
