ATWOOD (February 18) — In District 13A basketball action, the West Carroll War Eagles defeated a determined Rebel squad 67-58 in the consolation game.

Rebel Josh Brown’s three three-pointer performance spurred his team to an 18-15 lead at the end of the first period.

West Carroll, trailing 24-20 at the 5:30 mark of the second period, utilized Thomas Greer’s three three-pointer performance to outscore the Rebels 20-6 and take a 35-24 lead at the half.

Rebels’ Shabree Payne, Josh Brown and Derek Carr paced the Rebels’ second half charge as McKenzie trimmed the West Carroll lead to 37-30 at the 5:03 mark. Payne converted a lay-up at the 4:39 mark to narrow the War Eagle lead to 37-33. At the 3:25 mark, Payne drilled a three-pointer to cut the War Eagle lead to 37-36. Trailing 46-43 with three seconds remaining in the half, Rebel Derek Carr unleashed a half court buzzer-beating three-pointer to knot the game at 46-all at the end of the third frame.

Utilizing strong defensive play and shot selection, West Carroll and McKenzie battled to a 49-all tie at the 6:25 mark. West Carroll responded as Clint McClain converted a two-pointer to widen the War Eagles’ lead to 59-51 at the2:59 mark.

Down but not out, McKenzie’s Hunter Herrin converted a two-pointer at the 1:10 to narrow the War Eagle lead to 59-55.

Rebounding a War Eagle shot attempt, the Rebels passed the ball to Carr who drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to close the War Eagle lead to 60-58 with 45 seconds remaining in the contest.

McKenzie, trailing 61-58 and forced to foul to stop the clock, placed War Eagle Thomas Greer on the free throw line to attempt a one and one with 35 seconds remaining. Stepping to the line, Greer calmly converted both shots from the charity stripe to increase the War Eagles’ lead to 63-58.

Racing down court, McKenzie attempted a three-pointer that bounced off the rim and was rebounded by War Eagle Greer who was immediately fouled with 19 seconds remaining on the game clock. Greer again calmly converted both free throw attempts to give his team a 65-58 lead.

McKenzie’s final three-point attempt careened off the rim and was rebounded by War Eagle Xavier Cunningham who was immediately fouled with six seconds remaining.

Cunningham converted both free throws to give the War Eagles a hard-fought 67-58 consolation victory.

The War Eagles were led offensively by Greer (27 points, four three-pointers), Clint McClain (17) and Cunningham (13). Also contributing scoring for West Carroll were Juelius Taylor (3), Hayden McClain (5) and Justin Scruggs (2).
