War Eagles Defeat Rebels in Consolation Game
67-58 |

ATWOOD (February 18) — In District 13A
basketball action, the West Carroll War
Eagles defeated a determined Rebel squad
67-58 in the consolation game.
Rebel Josh Brown’s three three-pointer
performance spurred his team to an 18-15
lead at the end of the first period.
West Carroll, trailing 24-20 at the 5:30
mark of the second period, utilized Thomas
Greer’s three three-pointer performance to
outscore the Rebels 20-6 and take a 35-24
lead at the half.
Rebels’ Shabree Payne, Josh Brown and Derek
Carr paced the Rebels’ second half charge as
McKenzie trimmed the West Carroll lead to
37-30 at the 5:03 mark. Payne converted a
lay-up at the 4:39 mark to narrow the War
Eagle lead to 37-33. At the 3:25 mark, Payne
drilled a three-pointer to cut the War Eagle
lead to 37-36. Trailing 46-43 with three
seconds remaining in the half, Rebel Derek
Carr unleashed a half court buzzer-beating
three-pointer to knot the game at 46-all at
the end of the third frame.
Utilizing strong defensive play and shot
selection, West Carroll and McKenzie battled
to a 49-all tie at the 6:25 mark. West
Carroll responded as Clint McClain converted
a two-pointer to widen the War Eagles’ lead
to 59-51 at the2:59 mark.
Down but not out, McKenzie’s Hunter Herrin
converted a two-pointer at the 1:10 to
narrow the War Eagle lead to 59-55.
Rebounding a War Eagle shot attempt, the
Rebels passed the ball to Carr who drilled a
three-pointer from the top of the key to
close the War Eagle lead to 60-58 with 45
seconds remaining in the contest.
McKenzie, trailing 61-58 and forced to foul
to stop the clock, placed War Eagle Thomas
Greer on the free throw line to attempt a
one and one with 35 seconds remaining.
Stepping to the line, Greer calmly converted
both shots from the charity stripe to
increase the War Eagles’ lead to 63-58.
Racing down court, McKenzie attempted a
three-pointer that bounced off the rim and
was rebounded by War Eagle Greer who was
immediately fouled with 19 seconds remaining
on the game clock. Greer again calmly
converted both free throw attempts to give
his team a 65-58 lead.
McKenzie’s final three-point attempt
careened off the rim and was rebounded by
War Eagle Xavier Cunningham who was
immediately fouled with six seconds
remaining.
Cunningham converted both free throws to
give the War Eagles a hard-fought 67-58
consolation victory.
The War Eagles were led offensively by Greer
(27 points, four three-pointers), Clint
McClain (17) and Cunningham (13). Also
contributing scoring for West Carroll were
Juelius Taylor (3), Hayden McClain (5) and
Justin Scruggs (2).
McKenzie was led offensively by Payne (19
points, two three-pointers), Carr (15
points, four three-pointer), Josh Brown (13
points, three three-pointers), Tyler Holt
(6) and Hunter Herrin (5). |
