McKENZIE (May 4) — Four hundred twenty-nine students received associate, bachelors, or graduate degrees during the spring commencement at Bethel University on Saturday, May 4.
Mr. David Salyers, commissioner of Environment and Conservation for the State of Tennessee was the commencement speaker. Undergraduate degrees were conferred during the 9 a.m. ceremony and graduate degrees were conferred at 1 p.m., both in the Crisp Arena.
Salyers presented a seven-point message of personal points that have attributed to his success. His message was:

(1) Have a higher purpose, (2) pursue life with passion, (3) the quality of your decisions will echo across time, (4) develop strong trustworthy relations that you can use when you need counsel, (5) don’t look to blame – look toward the solution, (6) learn to be comfortable with who you are, warts included, and (7) what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Bethel President Walter Butler presented each graduate his or her degree as the graduate’s name was announced. At the conclusion, the graduates’ relationship with the university changes on that day. He noted they join the 18,000 Bethel graduates around the world.
