Carroll County Approves New Solid Waste Contractor

Posted

HUNTINGDON (April 8) — Carroll County commissioners awarded a five-year contract to Red River Waste Solutions of Union City to provide weekly curbside weekly solid waste collection and disposal for approximately 6,000 households in rural Carroll County. The contract begins July 1.
Red River offered a price of fixed price of $13.23 monthly for five years. That is less expensive than the $14.22 now charged by the current contractor, Republic Services, which offered a renewal price of $14.49 for the first year with annual increases up to $16.30 monthly in year five.
The resolution was on the February agenda, however, commissioners delayed for one month to investigate the viability and service record of Red River. Republic Services, the current provider, has had the contract for approximately 25 years and asked commissioners to research Red River, the low bidder, for its service record.

With the new contractor, the resolution calls for the customers’ rate to remain unchanged for five years at $18 monthly, which is the current rate. The difference in costs of $13.23 and the final cost of $18 is administrative charges and monthly billing.
In other resolutions, the county approved the sale of .038 acres of land for $900 to the Tennessee Department of Transportation to facilitate the new section of State Route 76 (US 79) which will bypass both Atwood and Trezevant and reconnect to the existing route north of Trezevant at Cutlip Lane.
Approved appointments of Rita Jones and Billy Smith to the Board of Zoning Appeals and Carroll County Regional Planning Commission.
A resolution was approved to apply for a 100 percent USDA grant to fund a pilot program for adult education. Mayor Joseph Butler said the funding would be in the $30,000 to $35,000 range to purchase equipment. If the grant is approved, the first pilot program would possibly be in the Bruceton area.
