Los Angeles (September 30) — Former University of Iowa standout and Rose Bowl quarterback, CJ Beathard assumed starting quarterback duties for the San Francisco 49ers. Beathard is the grandson of retired Bethel University professor Cindy Summers and nephew to funeral director Joel Summers.
Following a season ending torn ACL for Jimmy Garoppolo in week three at Kansas City, Beathard was given the nod from 49er head coach Kyle Shanahan. He was named starting quarterback last season only to be benched in week twelve. Shanahan believes Beathard’s maturation as quarterback will allow him to step up and play at the necessary level this season.
In Sunday’s 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Beathard was 23 of 37 in passing for 298 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Early in the fourth quarter, the 49ers held a 27-26 lead before the Chargers responded with a mid-quarter field goal to take a two point game winning lead.
The young quarterback is in his second season of professional football. At Iowa, Beathard lead the Hawkeyes to a spot in the 2015 Big Ten conference championship against Michigan State. Beathard and his Hawkeyes went on to play Stanford in the 2016 Rose Bowl. He was draft by the 49ers in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft.
