McKENZIE (February 25) — It was “do or die” for four teams Monday in the Region 6A Girls Basketball Semifinals at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena. Two winners would advance to Wednesday’s championship game and be guaranteed a Sectional appearance on Saturday. The two losing teams would see their seasons come to an abrupt end.
In the opener, the Huntingdon Fillies trailed the Summertown Lady Eagles in the early minutes, but it quickly became a back-and-forth affair. The game reached a fever pitch with a 54-54 tie with less than ten seconds to play. Lady Eagle Hailey Jones went for a fast break, but Huntingdon’s Tyasia Reed charged down the court and prevented the easy bucket by committing her fifth foul. The collision sent her crashing into the base of the goal, where she remained on the floor for several minutes. She eventually stood and was helped off the court as fans on all sides applauded.
Jones then went to the line for two shots. She missed the first, eliciting cheers from Huntingdon fans. The other side erupted as the second shot connected to give Summertown a one-point lead. With five seconds remaining, Adyn Swenson inbounded the ball to Alli Jones, the Fillies’ elite passer. Jones hurled the ball down the court to Addison Postlethwait. With a Summertown defender closing in, Postlethwait tossed it to Brooke Butler on the opposite wing, but the pass was just over Butler’s reach and fell out of bounds as time expired with a 55-54 Summertown win.
In the nightcap, the McKenzie Lady Rebels jumped out to an early lead over the Loretto Lady Mustangs, but Loretto rallied to take a halftime lead. After an even third quarter, the Lady Rebels trailed by just four. Lady Mustang Karly Weathers took command in the fourth, attacking the basket and hitting eight of nine free throws to push Loretto to a 58-47 victory.
