The 2018 football season is officially here with several local teams participating in the McDonald’s Jamboree in Henry County, Friday, August 10. Ten teams played a half of football against each other getting their kids playing time for the season to come.
West Carroll vs Murray
The Jamboree kicked off with West Carroll facing Murray High School. The War Eagles showed a stingy defense against a talented Murray squad. West Carroll scored first on a quarterback keeper by senior Trace Fuller with 1:18 left in the first period. The extra point attempt was no good giving West Carroll a 6-0 lead. Murray answered with a touchdown pass with 9:02 left in the second period. Extra point was good giving Murray a 7-6 lead. After swapping possessions, the War Eagles found the endzone again with 4:12 left on a scoring run by # 24 Jarrius Weatherford. West Carroll went for a 2-point conversion attempt which failed but still left them with a 12-7 lead. Murray answered with a long drive resulting in a winning touchdown pass in the back of the endzone with :36 seconds on the clock. A 2-pt conversion attempt failed but gave Murray the win 13-12 in what would be the closest score all night.
Martin-Westview vs Stewart Co.
Martin Westview’s Chargers posted a 27-0 win in a turnover-filled contest. Stewart County fumbles set up all but the first score for the Chargers. They took the ball first and quickly scored in less than two minutes on a run by Marquis Taylor. Extra point was good by J.T. Carver to make it a 7-0 contest. The Rebels fumbled at their own 24 a few plays into their first drive giving the Chargers a short field to work with. Marquis Taylor found the endzone again with J.T. Carver’s extra point good for an early 14-0 lead. The Charger defense forced Stewart County into a 3 and out on their next possession and the efficient offense went right back to work with a drive ending in a touchdown catch by Parker Bell. Carver’s extra point was good for a 21-0 lead to close out the first period.
Both teams substituted freely in the second period with Martin Westview’s second team getting a touchdown on a quarterback keeper by Ty Simpson. Extra point was no good for a final score of 27-0.
Dresden vs Hickman Co.
Dresden took the field against Hickman County in the third matchup of the night. The Bulldogs took the ball first driving to the Dresden 28 before fumbling the ball away. Dresden marched downfield posting the first score with an 18-yard TD by Tyrone Jones with 5:19 left in the first period. Point-after was good by J.B. Newsom for a 7-0 Lion lead. Hickman County moved the ball out to their own 38 before turning the ball over again. This time Divers Lockhart picked up the fumble and took it home for a touchdown with :50 seconds left in the first period. Newsom was good on the extra point for a 14-0 Dresden lead. Hickman County’s third turnover set up another Dresden score with 10:12 left in the second period on a touchdown reception by Drake Yates. Newsom’s extra point was no good giving Dresden a 20-0 lead which turned out to be the final score.
Henry County vs Waverly
The fourth matchup brought the most fireworks as Henry County took on Waverly. This contest featured big plays by both teams. Waverly drew first blood early scoring with the extra point no good for a 6-0 lead. The Patriots answered on a touchdown pass by Ethan Thompson. Extra point was good for a 7-6 Patriot lead. A short time later Henry County blew up a Waverly drive with an 8-yard sack. Very next play, Henry County’s Jayln Foster took off for an 81-yard TD. Extra point was no good giving the Patriots a brief 13-7 lead. Waverly answered on the next drive with a 73-yard touchdown catch by JD Dixon. Extra point was good tying the contest at 13-13 near the end of the first period. Both teams subbed quite a bit in the second period. Henry County took the lead for good with 7:35 left in the contest on a 23-yard TD by Jayden Kendall. Extra point was good for a 20-13 Henry County lead which was the final score.
McKenzie vs Milan
McKenzie’s Rebels took on Milan in the nightcap contest. There were a number of good individual efforts by the Rebels but not enough to stop the Bulldogs on this night. Milan scored first on a 63 yard TD pass by Malachai Allen. Extra point was good for a 7-0 Bulldog lead. A McKenzie turnover set up Milan’s next score which came with :30 seconds left in the first period on a 20-yard TD by Isaiah Pearson. Extra point was good for a 14-0 Milan lead. McKenzie recovered a Milan turnover and threatened to score but ended up turning the ball over on downs after failing to convert a fourth down attempt. Milan found the end zone one last time on a 20-yard score by Anferney Lambert. Extra point was good for the final score of 21-0 Milan.
