Huntingdon Coca Cola Classic: Huntingdon, McKenzie Win

HUNTINGDON (December 28) — Day two of the 2018 Coca Cola Classic Tournament was a bit shorter but no less interesting with two girls and two boys games on tap. Both Camden teams, Riverside girls, Obion County girls, Lexington boys and McKenzie boys were all in action.
Riverside 51 Camden 35
The opening contest between the Riverside Lady Panthers and Camden’s Lady Lions was a close affair in the first half with Camden leading at the half 29-26. However, it was a 15-4 Lady Panther run to open the third period that changed the game completely with Riverside taking a 41-33 lead at the end of the third period. Riverside held Camden to just 2 points in the final period to finish with a 51-35 win.
Maggie Melton and Kyndel McKenzie led Riverside with 11 points each. Jacey Roberts and Mattie Pulley added 9 points apiece followed by Emily Wade with 8 points. Abigail Swindle chipped in 3 for the Lady Panthers.
Camden was led by Abby Berry with 13 points followed by Rylee Rushing with 8 points. Jaydn Staggs had 5 points, Brenna Caldwell had 4 points, Brittney Fox with 3 points, and Haylee Lowry with 2 points for the Lady Lions.
Camden 103 Lexington 101 OT
By far the most entertaining game of the day was the overtime barnburner between Camden’s Lions and Lexington’s Tigers. Both teams came out hot and kept it close in the opening period with Camden holding a slim 23-20 lead at the end of the first period. The Lions opened up the lead a little in the second period with a 50-41 lead at the half.
Camden went up by 12 points early in the third period but Lexington stormed back and closed the gap to 66-63 with 2:30 left in the period. The two teams swapped three-pointers the remainder of the period with Camden still holding the lead 72-67 at the end of three periods. The two teams battled to an 87-87 tie with a minute to play in the game. Camden took a 90-87 with 30 seconds to play. Lexington tied the game 90-90 on a three-point play with 2.4 seconds left forcing it into overtime.
Camden opened the overtime period with a pair of three-pointers while Lexington answered with a basket and a three pointer. The two teams went back and forth the entire overtime period. Fouls became a problem with Lexington players fouling out. Camden’s last four points came on free throws to win the contest 103-101.
Six Lions scored in double figures led by Davis Hopkins with 30 points. Tytus Guajardo followed with 19 points. Garrett Vick had 15, Sage Duffey had 12, Chase Douglass had 11 and Heath Daniel had 10 points. Zack Oxford chipped in 6 for the Lions.
Lexington’s Tigers had 5 in double figures led by Daunte Melton with 26 points, Zac Douglas 23, Justin Russell with 15, Malik Johnson with 13, and Caleb Gordon with 12. Austin Wood and Wyatt Davis had 4 points each while Kenneth Jones and Donte Bard chipped in 2 points each for the Tigers.

Huntingdon 50 Obion County 39
Huntingdon’s Fillies hosted Obion County in the second girls matchup of the afternoon. Both teams had trouble finding the basket in the first couple of minutes of the first period until the Lady Rebels nailed a 3 to take the lead. The Fillies warmed up and took over the lead 7-4 with 3 minutes left in the period and hung on to a slim 10-9 lead at the end of one period.
Both teams warmed up in the second period tying up the game 15-15 with four minutes left until half. Obion hit back to back 3-pointers to take a 21-15 lead with 2:30 to play. The Fillies made it a three-point game trailing 22-19 at halftime.
Huntingdon came out hot in the third period scoring the first 8 points to take a 27-22 lead two minutes into the period. They opened the lead further 31-24 with three minutes to play and closed out the third period with back to back 3’s to lead 42-28. The Fillies scored 23 points in the period while holding Obion to just 6 points. Obion recovered from the third period and outscored Huntingdon 11-8 in the final period but the Fillies took home the win 50-39.
Tyasia Reed led the Fillies with 21 points including four 3-pointers, Allie Jones and Brooke Butler added 9 and 8 points respectively. Adyn Swenson had 5 while Kamaya Harris had 3 points for the Fillies. Addison Postlethwait and Macey Culbreath each chipped in 2 points for Huntingdon.
Obion County was led by Emma Johnson and Macy Little with 14 points and 13 points respectively. Alexus Ables added 5, Ella Decker had 4, and Alexus Hooper had 3 for the Lady Rebels.
McKenzie 72 Waverly 38
In the tournament finale, McKenzie’s Rebels overcame a disappointing loss to Lexington the previous day with a dominating performance against Waverly’s Tigers. Senior Ben Austin scored McKenzie’s first 11 points enroute to a 15-9 first period lead. The Rebels opened the second period with a 17-0 run while holding Waverly to just 2 points in the period to lead 32-11 at halftime.
McKenzie opened the third period the same way with a 7-0 run on the way to outscoring the Tigers 18-10 during the period to lead 50-21 at the end of three periods. Both teams played younger players in the fourth period with the Rebels barely outscoring Waverly 22-18 to finish the win.
Ten McKenzie players scored in the contest with Ben Austin leading all scorers with 30 points in the contest. Nate Whitsell had 12 for the Rebels. Caleb Gill and Jonathan Moore had 7 points each. Lucas King had 5, Lazerick Hill had 4, Evan Jarrett and Elijah Seivers had 2 points each, and Wes Cook chipped in 1 for the Rebels.
Waverly was led by Noah Foster with 11 points. JD Dixon added 7 while Tommy Mitchell and Colton Cochran had 5 points each. Ethan Sanders had 3 points while Clayton King, Mason Malone, and Brian Dodd all had 2 points each. Brian Johnson chipped in 1 point for the Tigers.
