Inglenook Book Club December News

Posted

In December 21 members of the Inglenook Book Club met at Lakeside Senior Living Center for a Christmas luncheon with Gena Manner and Sally Sutton serving as hostesses. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food prepared by the Lakeside staff.
In October, the club voted to donate a portion of our funds to the McKenzie Memorial Library for the purchase of new books.   Present at our December meeting was Jean Alexander, librarian.
We were also honored by having two other visitors, Lela Carter and Ann Prince, guests of Shelia Rogers.
During the business meeting, Recording Secretary Carolyn Goodwin read a letter of resignation from Gena Manner who is moving to Nashville. The membership accepted Gena’s resignation with much regret and wish her well in her new home.
We were unable to meet in November at Marilynn Putman’s home as scheduled because of bad weather. This was the first time any member could recall a meeting being canceled due to the weather. Marilynn expressed her regrets for not being able to host the meeting in her home.
President Donna Ward gave the report from the Nominating Committee composed of Victoria Ard, Marilynn Putman, and Carolyn Potts. The 2019 slate of officers will remain the same: Donna Ward, President; Sally Sutton, Vice President; Carolyn Goodwin, Recording Secretary; Mary Newman, Book Secretary; and Sandi McMahen, Treasurer. These officers were elected unanimously.
The club welcomed back Suzanne Russell who had not been able to attend for quite some time due to the illness of her husband, Dr. Harold Russell. Suzanne thanked everyone for their many recent expressions of love and sympathy.
Donna Ward thanked all the committee chairmen for their work throughout the year.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Geneva Johnson, Zia Locke, and Elaine Williams who have December birthdays. Those having November birthdays were Carolyn Goodwin and Sally Sutton.
President Ward again reminded everyone that the titles and authors of the 2019 books should be turned in to Book Secretary Mary Newman before the first of the year. Our January program will be a short synopsis given by each member of the new book she is putting in for passing throughout the year.
The program was presented by Jean Alexander who began by thanking the club for our donation to the library. The library is currently holding a sale of 3,000 books, and she distributed flyers showing details for members to post in various locations in town. They are opening on two Saturdays this month for the sale.
The library tries to order new books currently listed on The New York Times and other best-seller lists. It relies largely on state and federal funds, and appreciates all contributions and donations. A brief history was given of the McKenzie library which currently occupies the McKenzie Banking Company’s old building on Broadway. The banking company donated the building to the library when it relocated to the corner of Main and Cedar streets. The former McKenzie chapter of the Business & Professional Women was largely responsible for its operation for many years.
The McKenzie library now functions with the Library Board of seven members, and a recently formed group, Friends of the Library. Several Bethel students do temporary work as staffers. While not as large as the Carroll County Library in Huntingdon, the McKenzie library is a Level II with 5,000 books. It both orders and sends out books in a cooperative lending program with other libraries in Tennessee. If a reader is interested in a particular book not carried by our library, the staff can locate and order it from another library in the state.
“Tennessee Reads” is an online app available for readers to download and read books.   All that is needed is a current library card. The McKenzie library also makes available audio books and computer access free of charge. It is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except holidays.
Our January meeting will be at Lakeside with Peggy Chappell and Suzanne Howell as hostesses.
After the book passing, members recited the club benediction and the meeting adjourned.
Members present were: Victoria Ard, Juanita Finley, Carolyn Goodwin, Suzanne Howell, Geneva Johnson, Zia Locke, Gena Manner, Shirley Martin, Jean McKinnie, Sandi McMahen, Mary Newman, Carolyn Potts, Marilynn Putman, Debbie Riley, Shelia Rogers, Gaye Rowan, Suzanne Russell, Genia Sherwood, Sally Sutton, Donna Ward, and Elaine Williams.
