McKENZIE (January 3) — Students returned from the holiday break Thursday morning, and high school basketball resumed that evening as McKenzie hosted Dresden. The Lady Rebels kept it close in the first half, but the Lady Lions pulled away in the third quarter for a 59-37 win. The Rebels controlled their game from the opening tip-off and cruised to a 74-21 win.
Dresden Lady Lions 59, McKenzie Lady Rebels 37
The Lady Lions took a 13-9 lead after the opening frame, led by Rachel Childress with four points. Katie Washburn hit a three-pointer, and Lakin Overton, Mikayla Peterson and Tinley Winn each had a pair. Lady Rebel Anna Callahan scored four points, Camille Travis hit a three, and Lilly Bennett had a pair.
Dresden upped the lead with a 12-10 edge in the second quarter, led by Childress with six points. Winn scored four, and Washburn added a pair. Dani Dyer scored five for McKenzie, including a three-pointer. Bennett and Mi’Kayla Gill each had a pair, and Whitley Smith hit a free throw. At the half, the Lady Lions led 25-19.
The Lady Lions pulled away with a 24-9 advantage in the third, led by Washburn with eight points, including a pair of threes. Childress again scored six. Peterson and Winn each had five, Peterson with a three-pointer. Travis hit another three for the Lady Rebels, and Gill, Smith and Bennett each added a pair. Entering the final frame, Dresden led 49-28.
Dresden capped the win with a 10-9 tilt in the fourth. Peterson and Jaiden Mangiaracinia each scored four points, and Winn added a pair. Shelby Davis led McKenzie with seven points, including a pair of three-pointers, and Callahan added a pair.
Lady Lion Rachel Childress led all scorers with 16 points. Tinley Winn and Katie Washburn each scored 13. Washburn had a trio of three-pointers, and Winn was a perfect seven-of-seven at the line. Mikayla Peterson had eleven points with a three.
Shelby Davis led McKenzie with seven points, including a pair of threes. Lilly Bennett, Anna Callahan and Camille Travis each scored six, Travis on a pair of threes.
Rebels 74, Lions 21
McKenzie jumped out to a 19-3 lead after the first frame, led by Ben Austin with eight points. Lucas King scored six, including a three-pointer, and Lazarick Hill had five points, also with a three. Tyrone Jones scored all three Dresden points.
The Rebel dominance continued in a 19-4 second quarter. Hill led with six points, and Austin scored five with a three-pointer. Brandon Hobson also hit a three, Lane Horton and Caleb Gill each had a pair, and Evan Jarrett hit a free throw. Jones was again the lone Dresden scorer with four points. At the half, McKenzie led 38-7.
McKenzie outscored the Lions 17-12 in the third, led by King with six points on a pair of threes. Nate Whitsell scored five, including a three, and Hill, Austin and Gill each added a pair. Divers Lockhart led Dresden with four points, and Kaleb Dilday hit a three-pointer. Jones and J.B. Newsome each had a pair, and Zach Crawford hit a free throw. Heading into the final frame, the Rebels led 55-19.
The Rebels punctuated the win with a 19-2 advantage in the fourth, led by West Cook with six points on a pair of threes. Jarrett scored four, and Johnathan Moore hit a three-pointer. Horton, Gill and Eli Surber each had a pair. Lion Chandler Turnbow scored two points.
Rebel Ben Austin led all scorers with 15 points, including a three-pointer. Lazarick Hill scored 13, also with a three. Lucas King had a dozen, including a trio of threes.
Tyrone Jones led Dresden with nine points.
