Lady Rockets Edge Lady Rebels, Rebels Cruise

McKENZIE (January 15) — McKenzie High School hosted Clarksburg Tuesday for a pair of district contests.
The girls game was tight from buzzer to buzzer with plenty of ties and lead changes. The Lady Rockets led by one after the first, but the Lady Rebels came back to take a five-point lead at the half. Clarksburg rallied for the lead in the third, and a back-and-forth final frame ended in a 41-40 Lady Rocket victory.
The Rebels got off to a slow start, but picked up offensively in the second quarter en route to a 77-31 win over the Rockets.
During halftime of the girls’ game, participants in the recent Taylor’s Cheer Camp performed what they had learned for the McKenzie fans. The McKenzie High School cheerleaders host Taylor’s Cheer Camp each year in honor of Taylor Buckley, an MHS cheerleader who died in a car accident on October 13, 2011 at age 16.

The Lady Rockets had a 13-12 edge after the opening frame, led by Krista Noble with eleven points, including a trio of three-pointers.
Sarah Derryberry scored two points. Lady Rebels Whitley Smith and Camille Travis each hit a three-pointer, and Mi’Kayla Gill, Lilly Bennett and Anna Callahan each had a pair.
McKenzie doubled up Clarksburg 12-6 in the second quarter, led by Dani Dyer and Shelby Davis with five points each, each with a three-pointer. Bennett added a pair. Lady Rocket Brooklyn Williams scored four points, including a three, and Derryberry added a pair. At the half, the Lady Rebels led 24-19.
Clarksburg had a 13-6 advantage in the third, led by Williams with five points, including another three. Makiya Abdallah scored four points, Derryberry hit a three-pointer, and Ashlyn Yarbrough hit a free throw. Gill scored four for McKenzie, and Davis and Bennett each hit a free throw. Entering the final frame, the Lady Rockets led 32-30.
A fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Rebels came up just short at 10-9. Dyer and Davis each scored four, Dyer with a three-pointer, and Gill added a pair. Yarbrough scored six for Clarksburg with a three-pointer. Derryberry added a pair, and Sami Roney hit a free throw.

Lady Rocket Krista Noble led all scorers with eleven points, including a trio of threes. Sarah Derryberry and Brooklyn Williams each scored nine, Derryberry with a three and Williams with a pair of them.
Shelby Davis led McKenzie with ten points, including a three-pointer. Dani Dyer scored nine with a pair of threes.
Rebels 77, Rockets 31
McKenzie had a 17-8 lead after the first frame, led by Ben Austin with six points. Lucas King and Lazarick Hill each scored four, Lane Horton had a pair, and Nate Whitsell hit a free throw. Jordan Morris led Clarksburg with six points, and Myles Rogers had a pair.
The Rebels pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Rockets 30-12. Austin led again with 14 points, including a three-pointer. King scored nine, also with a three.
Hill had four, and Caleb Gill scored three points. Rocket Tanner Longmire scored five points, and Morris had three points. Nathan Yewell had a pair, and Rogers and Spencer Webb each hit a free throw. At the half, McKenzie led 47-20.
McKenzie had a 23-4 advantage in the third, led by Johnathan Moore with six points, including a three-pointer. Whitsell scored five, also with a three. King and Hill each hit a three, and Horton, Brandon Hobson and Eli Surber each had a pair. Rogers and Morris each added a pair for Clarksburg. Heading into the final frame, the Rebels led 70-24.
The fourth was a 7-7 wash. Rebel Zayden McCaslin hit a three-pointer, and Jaden Currie and Andrew Cole each had a pair. Rocket Logan Witcher scored three points, and Morris and Jakobe Clark each had a pair.
Rebel Ben Austin led all scorers with 20 points, including a three-pointer. Lucas King scored 16 with a pair of threes. Lazarick Hill had eleven with a three.
Jordan Morris led Clarksburg with 13 points.
