10 YEARS AGO — Lynn Watkins was selected as the new director of schools for the McKenzie Special School District.

*Construction began on Bethel College’s new state-of-the-art science building, one project in a series of capital improvements.

*The late Melinda Garrett, a 2001 McKenzie High School graduate who died of a sudden illness in 2006, was posthumously awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Her sister, Anna Garrett Verner, accepted a diploma and academic hood on her family’s behalf.

20 YEARS AGO — The McKenzie Fire and Rescue Department added to its fleet a 1989 Ford F-250 box truck, which was converted from a Serv-o-matic refreshment truck to a rescue truck by members of the department over a period of four months.

*The McKenzie City Council approved the acquisition of Intermedia Cable by Charter Communications.

50 YEARS AGO — Showing at the Park Theatre: Swiss Family Robinson starring Dorothy McGuire, John Mills and Tommy Kirk; Doctor Dolittle starring Rex Harrison, Samantha Egger and Anthony Newley; and Support Your Local Sheriff starring James Garner and Joan Hackett.
