McKENZIE (July 11)— During the regular monthly meeting of the McKenzie Board of Mayor and Council the 2019-2020 budget was approved on the second and final reading. The budget was approved unanimously following the motion from Vice-Mayor Jessie Townes and second by Councilman Jason Martin.
During citizens input, the council agreed to expand water lines to improve fire coverage on the Henry County portion of Highway 22 South. Former McKenzie Mayor Walter Winchester representing Bethel Baptist Church during the meeting asked the council to consider extending water lines and installing a fire hydrant in between the church and D&D Service Center. In order for the church to expanded its structure, they need closer access to a fire hydrant. Fire Chief Brian Tucker said that he had been asked to sign a waiver. He said could not in good conscience sign it due to the fact the building was 1300 feet from the nearest fire hydrant and his hose would only reach about 1200 feet.
City Attorney Laura Keeton stated if the property was in the city limits, then it is the responsibility of the city to provide adequate fire coverage. Water Department Supervisor Billy Wood said his department could absorb the cost of supplying the water line and hydrant. The calculated cost is appropriately $6,000.
Debbie Riley took the oath of office to fill the vacancy of Ward IV seat. Riley will finish the unexpired term of office left by the Randy Callahan’s resignation.
Under financial matters the council agreed to the payment of $600,000 for new water meters from National Meters. The automated meters are part of the improvements from the agreement made with Trane earlier this year.
