Posted

McKENZIE (March 13) — In a special called meeting, the McKenzie Board of Mayor and Council approved Resolution 19-003 authorize matching funds for the small cities block grant program/CDBG for the fiscal year 2019. The city has made an application request of $525,000 through the grant and is required to provide local funds in the amount of $58,334.
Mayor Jill Holland explained a resolution must be passed for the city to borrow the money from the USDA for the matching grant. Rob Goad, the grant writer, said the grant would include further smoke testing and evaluation of sewer lines and to mitigate rainwater infiltration. This would including repairing pipes by cutting out the collapsed lines and replacing them.

The new grant has potential of giving the city a partial release on the current moratorium. Councilperson Charles Pruneau asked if the new work would tear up the streets. Goad explained most of the work would be adjacent to, not under the streets, but there are no guarantees.
In other business the council approved Resolution 19-002 to urge the Tennessee Legislature and Governor Bill Lee to adopt a state historic tax incentive, titled the Main Street Historic Rehabilitation and Tourism Revitalization Act. The adoption of the tax credit would provide incentives to investors in the City of McKenzie and other cities with an improved return on investment. In order to receive the tax credit, the private sector would have to complete improvements to a historic building and receive certification.
The next meeting of the Council and Mayor is 6 p.m., March 22 at McKenzie City Hall.
