McKenzie Elementary School Celebrates Read Across America Day

Posted

McKENZIE (February 28-March 1) — McKenzie Elementary School recognized Saturday, March 2 as Read Across America Day with events on Thursday and Friday.
Read Across America Day, set on the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, is recognized across the country by schools and libraries as a day to celebrate and promote reading.

Students and teachers at MES began the celebration by dressing as favorite book characters on Thursday.
That evening, activities were held at the school, including Book Bingo, a Book Walk (similar to a cake walk) and Family Reading in the library. Wandering the halls spreading cheer and mischief were The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 (portrayed by Hayden Edwards, Lyndsey Summers and Sara Beacham, respectively). Edwards and Beacham are students at Bethel University, and Summers attends McKenzie High School.
Friday morning, students from McKenzie Middle School and McKenzie High School visited MES to read books aloud to the children. The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 made an encore appearance (this time portrayed by MHS students Amberleigh Cooper, Drew Beeler and Camille Travis, respectively).
