The McKenzie Garden Club met Friday, October 26 at Lakeside Retirement Center.

The meeting was called to order by President Donna Hodge. Roll call was done with 12 members present.

Susan Lawrence read the devotional: a poem from the book Garden Blessings entitled, “Bless the Gardener.” Gladys Patterson, correspondence chair, reported on various cards sent. Cynthia Summers gave the financial report, which was approved.

Under old business, our scarecrow, Lady Greensleeves was completed and judging will be after Thanksgiving. There was no new business at this time.

The speaker was Jeff Heyduck, director of Solid Waste and Recycling for Carroll County. Mr. Heyduck brought samples of recycled materials and its future uses. Recyclables include cardboard, office paper, junk mail, newspaper, scrap metal, used oil and automotive batteries. He explained how recycling saves money for the county and decreases the amount of solid waste going into the landfills.

The meeting was adjourned following the reading of the Collect. Members then enjoyed fall fare of sandwiches, chips and dip and pumpkin bread.

The November meeting is at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Hostesses will be Sarah Brown, Martha Sue Peters and Gladys Patterson.
