The McKenzie High School ladies’ and gentlemen’s golf team endured weather elements last week to each win the District 14 Golf Tournament at Sharon.
The ladies were led by tournament medalist Maggie Glass with a blistering two-over-par 75. Julie French’s 92 in her final district tournament for the Rebels earned her an individual third place finish and added to the 167 team total and a dominating 88-stroke victory over their closest competitor.
Glass and French were joined by senior teammate Mallory Cole in claiming three of the top four individual finishes, with Cole claiming fourth place individually.
The gentlemen defeated Union City by seven strokes in claiming their District Championship.
Johnathan Moore emerged as tournament medalist, shooting a four-over-par 76. Ben Austin shot 80 to finish fourth individually with Logan Green and Nathan Nanney shooting 85 and 91, respectively, to complete the winning 332 team total.
Coach Smith was pleased with his team’s play and response to the adverse weather conditions. Said conditions created some modified rules due to standing water on the course, to which Smith noted that the rules sometimes worked for you as opposed to against you when the course presented limitations due to rain.
He hopes both teams can maintain their focus as they play in the region tournament, where only the champion team advances to the state tournament.
Senior ladies Cole, French and Wright and senior gentlemen Austin and Will McBride enjoyed a District Championship in their final district tournament.
With these results, the ladies’ record is now 39-8-2 with the gentlemen at 58-5.
Both Rebel teams will be looking to defend their Region Championships from last year and earn a second consecutive trip to the state tournament in Manchester.
The region tournament is played at Sharon on Monday, October 1.
