The Morning Glory Garden Club met in June at Lakeside Retirement Center with President Judy Davis and Vice President Donna Hodge serving as hostesses. Following a delicious brunch, President Davis called the meeting to order and members recited the club Collect and Pledge to the Flag. Judy then welcomed members and guests Larry Scott and Joe Fitzgerald and also thanked Donna for serving as co-hostess. She also thanked Sara Fitzgerald and Leslie Lewis for providing flowers from their gardens to be used to design arrangements for National Garden Week.
The roll was called and Chaplain Julia Winters gave the “Thought for the Day” from an excerpt by Katie Dawson titled “Wonder” and words from the song, “For the Beauty of the Earth” which shows us how the glory of God always surrounds us if we are willing to take the time to look. President Davis then asked for correspondence to be shared with the club. The club had received a letter of resignation from Diane Stafford and members voted to accept her resignation “with regret.”
The next item of business was in regard to Diane Harvey. She and her family have relocated to Louisiana. Several members had expressed a desire to keep in contact with her and her family. President Judy Davis then gave the treasurer’s report. The Civic Committee reported that the Butterfly Release had taken place as well as the planting of geraniums and ivy in the baskets at Veterans Park. Sunshine Chair Robbie Barker sent cards to Allie Harvey who graduated from McKenzie High School this year, and birthday cards to Donna Hodge, Lucille Russell and Diane Stafford. A card will be sent to Gena Manner’s daughter. “Happy Birthday” was then sung to our birthday ladies.
Group II placed the Yard of the Month sign at the home of Mrs. Wynemia Mouser located on Highland Drive.
Yard of the Month for July goes to the best decorated patriotic yard. New business involved the decorating of the Veterans Park benches for the July 4 holiday, and members will be called regarding time and date. The club does not meet during the months of July and August. Group I will choose the Yard of the Month for July and Group II will choose August.
Horticulture for this meeting was provided by Robbie Barker, including verbena, fern and petunia.
