District 11A Basketball Quarterfinals

No Surprises in Opening Round as Higher Seeds Advance

McKENZIE (February 9) — The District 11A Basketball Tournament began Saturday with five quarterfinal contests at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena. There were no upsets as all five higher-seeded teams claimed wins. In fact, the closest margins of the day were two games each decided by 23 points.
Advancing to Monday’s girls semifinals were the West Carroll Lady War Eagles, who would face the Huntingdon Fillies (first-round bye). The Clarksburg Lady Rockets would meet the McKenzie Lady Rebels (first-round bye). (Those results were not available by press time.)
Moving on to Tuesday’s boys semifinals were the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers, who will face the McKenzie Rebels (first-round bye) at 6 p.m. The West Carroll War Eagles and Huntingdon Mustangs will meet at 7:30 p.m.
All five of Saturday’s winners and those teams with first-round byes will advance to the Region 6A Tournament.
Eliminated with Saturday’s losses were the Natchez Trace Youth Academy Trailblazers, Central Lady Tigers, Big Sandy Red Devils and Lady Red Devils and Clarksburg Rockets.
(2)West Carroll War Eagles 80, (7) Natchez Trace Trailblazers 24
The War Eagles set the tone immediately, outscoring the Trailblazers 27-2 in the first frame. Tyson Keymon led with eleven points, including a trio of three-pointers. Zach Heckert scored five, and Jalen Anglin had four. Jeremiah Bryant scored three points, and Josh Clark and Dawson Hardwick each had a pair. Anthony Morrow had a pair for Natchez Trace.
West Carroll continued to dominate with a 24-4 advantage in the second quarter, led by Anglin and Luke Moore with eight points each, each with a pair of threes. Hardwick scored four points, and Keymon and Bryant each had a pair. Morrow and Tyce Thompson each had a pair for the Trailblazers. At the half, the War Eagles led 51-6.
The War Eagles had a 17-14 edge in the third, led by Colton Hart with seven points, including a three. Xander Moon hit a three-pointer, and Anglin also scored three points. Heckert and Jack Barrow each had a pair. Morrow led Natchez Trace with a dozen, and Emmanuel Castro had a pair. Heading into the final frame, West Carroll led 68-20.
West Carroll capped the win with a 12-4 tilt in the fourth, led by Jed Robinson with five points, including a three-pointer. Peyton Stratton scored three points, and Barrow and Hart each added a pair. Morrow scored all four Trailblazer points.
Trailblazer Anthony Morrow led all scorers with 20 points.
Jalen Anglin led West Carroll with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Tyson Keymon scored 13 with a trio of threes.
(4) West Carroll Lady War Eagles 67, (5) Central Lady Tigers 44
The Lady War Eagles jumped out to a 26-8 lead after the opening frame, led by Macey Cunningham with ten points, including a three-pointer. Alyssa Butler and Tatym Keymon each scored four, and Gracie Cunningham, Denver Brooks, Erin Norman and Amaya Thompson each had a pair. Lady Tiger Malorie Clements scored five points with a three, and Nevaeh Davis also hit a three-pointer.
West Carroll added to the lead with a 20-7 advantage in the second quarter, led by M. Cunningham with nine points, including another three. G. Cunningham scored seven, and Butler and Thompson each added a pair. Davis and Rikki Graser each hit a three-pointer for Central, and Laegan Binkley hit a free throw. At the half, the Lady War Eagles led 46-15.
The Lady Tigers knocked a point off of the deficit with a 15-14 edge in the third, led by Binkley with ten points, including a pair of threes. Davis hit another three, and Mya Harris had a pair. Thompson led West Carroll with six points. M. Cunningham, Butler and Katie Holt each had a pair, and Brooks and Norman each hit a freebie. Entering the final frame, the Lady War Eagles led 60-30.
Central rallied 14-7 in the fourth for a closer final score, led by Binkley with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Clements and Graser each hit a free throw. Kaylee Butler led West Carroll with five points, and M. Cunningham and A. Butler each hit a freebie.
Lady Tiger Laegan Binkley led all scorers with 23 points, including four three-pointers. Nevaeh Davis scored nine on a trio of threes.
Macey Cunningham led West Carroll with 22 points, including a pair of threes. Amaya Thompson scored ten, and Gracie Cunningham and Alyssa Butler each had nine points.

(5) Big Sandy Red Devils 70
The Red Devils had a 27-26 edge after the first frame, led by Randall Camfield with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Garrett Metcalf and Micheal Davis each scored six, Brandon Berry had four, and Kolton Christopher hit a three. Nick Zuro led Central with eleven points, including a pair of three-pointers. Brayden Frye scored six on a pair of threes. Mason Binkley had five with a three, and Trent Taylor and Mac Hooten each had a pair.
The Tigers rallied 22-10 to take the lead in the second quarter, led by Thomas Crews with six points on a pair of threes. Frye scored five with a three, and Zuro had four points. Binkley, Hooten and Davion Harris each had a pair, and Gage Lowry hit a free throw. Metcalf led Big Sandy with six points, and K. Christopher and Jaylen Christopher each had a pair. At the half, Central led 48-37.
Central pulled away with a 26-15 advantage in the third, led by Crews with six points on a pair of three-pointers. Binkley scored five with a three. Lowry, Hooten and Zuro each had four points, and Frye hit a three. Davis scored eight for the Red Devils, and Kameron Peach hit a three-pointer. Metcalf and Berry each added a pair. Heading into the final frame, the Tigers led 74-52.
The Tigers sealed the win with a 19-18 tilt in the fourth, led by Caleb Haskins with seven points, including a three-pointer. Noah Hampton scored five with a three. Taylor, Harris and Tyler Forrest each had a pair, and Hooten hit a free throw. K. Christopher led Big Sandy with seven points, including a three-pointer, and Johnathan Stockdale scored four. Keaton Rogers hit a three, and Metcalf and J. Christopher each added a pair.
Tiger Nick Zuro led all scorers with 19 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Brayden Frye scored 14 with four threes. Thomas Crews and Mason Binkley each scored a dozen, Crews with four three-pointers and Binkley with a pair.
Garrett Metcalf led Big Sandy with 16 points. Micheal Davis scored 14, and Kolton Christopher had 12 with a pair of three-pointers.
(3) Clarksburg Lady Rockets 65, (6) Big Sandy Lady Red Devils 28
Both teams started out the contest slow with the Lady Rockets leading 5-1 three minutes into the first period. They opened the lead to 16-6 by the end of the period. Brooklyn Williams and Ashlyn Yarbrough combined for 13 of the Lady Rocket’s 16 points.
A 10-2 Clarksburg run in the opening minutes of the second period extended their lead to 26-8 halfway through the period. Six Lady Rockets scored points as Clarksburg went on to lead 37-17 at the half.
Clarksburg began subbing in younger players after halftime and still put up another 17 points while holding the Lady Red Devils to just five points to lead 54-22 at the end of three periods. The mercy rule went into effect during the fourth period as the Lady Rockets outscored Big Sandy 11-6 to reach the final of 65-28.
Brooklyn Williams led Clarksburg with 19 points, followed by Ashlyn Yarbrough with ten points. Makiya Abdallah added nine points while Jasmine Bailey and ShyAnn Williams had six points each. Macy Ward and Sarah Derryberry had six points each. Kyleigh Scott and Grace Bartholomew chipped in two points each for Clarksburg.
Big Sandy was led by Ashlyn Berry and Courtney Steinbuck with nine points and eight points, respectively. Annalise Wade had four points while Lydia Dykes had three points. Kaylee Stockdale and Lauren Flowers chipped in two points each for the Lady Red Devils.
(3) Huntingdon Mustangs 70,
(6) Clarksburg Rockets 29
Huntingdon’s Mustangs opened the final game of the day with a 10-0 run and never looked back, rolling to a 25-7 first period lead. Kaleel Bailey and Dallas Willis paced the Mustangs with a combined 19 of their 25 points.
Xavier White picked up the slack in the second period with eight of Huntingdon’s 18 points as they rolled to a 43-15 halftime lead. Huntingdon’s reserves saw plenty of playing time in the third and fourth periods, with the Mustangs outscoring Clarksburg 15-8 in the third and 12-6 in the final period to reach the 70-29 final.
Huntingdon placed three in double figures, led by Dallas Willis with 16 points, Kaleel Bailey with 15 points and Xavier White with 12 points. Grant Bartholomew and Nik Bynum added seven points and six points, respectively. Noah Belew and Kameron Gordon had four points each while Ben Taylor, Jeb Atkinson and Hunter Ledsinger chipped in three points, two points and one point, respectively.
Clarksburg was led by Jordan Morris with eleven points. Tanner Longmire had five points, Brandon Pendergrass with four points, Jakobe Clark with three points, Myles Rogers and Braydon Cobb with two points each, and Nathan Yewell and Prentis Pledge chipped in one point each for the Rockets.
