GLEASON — Gleason High School hosted the Northwest Tennessee Class A All-Stars last Friday, April 12. Seniors from several local high schools participated in a girls contest and boys contest. There was also a 3-point shooting contest and a dunk contest as well.
McKenzie had three girls participate including MiKayla Gill, Tayla Stubbs, and Macey Ognibene. McKenzie’s Ben Austin and Huntingdon’s Kaleel Bailey participated in the boys contest.
East Girls 70, West Girls 67
It took most of the first quarter for the girls to knock off the post-season rust but after that both squads lit it up. East opened up with a 10-2 run in the opening four minutes of the contest but the West squad heated up with a 7-2 run of their own to make it a 12-9 game with two minutes to play in the period. East led 18-12 at the end of the first period.
By the start of the second quarter, the rust was definitely off. West took the lead 34-32 in the final minute but Gibson County’s Hannah Ball drained a long three at the buzzer to put the East back in the lead 35-34 at halftime.
East came out the third quarter and stormed to a 53-40 lead in the first six minutes of the period behind Trenton’s Kiera Hill’s 11 points in the period. East went on to lead 58-46 heading into the final period.
Hill and Gibson County’s K.J. White had 10 points each in the final period to pace the East squad. West put on a furious rally in the final minutes but fell short as the East squad held on to win 70-67.
The East team was led by Peabody’s Kiera Hill with 33 points and 21 rebounds and was named Outstanding Player of the Game, Gibson County’s K.J. White with 21 points, and McKenzie’s MiKayla Gill with 15 points. Lake County’s Carlee Rivers and Ayisha Hockett added 3 and 4 points respectively while South Fulton’s Amber Lemon chipped in four points for the East Squad.
