NWTN Class A All-Stars

GLEASON — Gleason High School hosted the Northwest Tennessee Class A All-Stars last Friday, April 12. Seniors from several local high schools participated in a girls contest and boys contest. There was also a 3-point shooting contest and a dunk contest as well.
McKenzie had three girls participate including MiKayla Gill, Tayla Stubbs, and Macey Ognibene. McKenzie’s Ben Austin and Huntingdon’s Kaleel Bailey participated in the boys contest.
East Girls 70, West Girls 67
It took most of the first quarter for the girls to knock off the post-season rust but after that both squads lit it up. East opened up with a 10-2 run in the opening four minutes of the contest but the West squad heated up with a 7-2 run of their own to make it a 12-9 game with two minutes to play in the period. East led 18-12 at the end of the first period.
By the start of the second quarter, the rust was definitely off. West took the lead 34-32 in the final minute but Gibson County’s Hannah Ball drained a long three at the buzzer to put the East back in the lead 35-34 at halftime.
East came out the third quarter and stormed to a 53-40 lead in the first six minutes of the period behind Trenton’s Kiera Hill’s 11 points in the period. East went on to lead 58-46 heading into the final period.
Hill and Gibson County’s K.J. White had 10 points each in the final period to pace the East squad. West put on a furious rally in the final minutes but fell short as the East squad held on to win 70-67.
The East team was led by Peabody’s Kiera Hill with 33 points and 21 rebounds and was named Outstanding Player of the Game, Gibson County’s K.J. White with 21 points, and McKenzie’s MiKayla Gill with 15 points. Lake County’s Carlee Rivers and Ayisha Hockett added 3 and 4 points respectively while South Fulton’s Amber Lemon chipped in four points for the East Squad.

The West team placed four in double figures led by Trenton’s Olivia Ware with 19 points and TCA’s Taylor Maxfield with 17 points while Gibson County’s Hannah Ball and Ashton Lannom added 11 and 10 points respectively. Gibson County’s McKinley Burkett had 8 points and McKenzie’s Macey Obnibene chipped in a pair of free throws for the West Team.
3-Point Contest and Dunk Contest
Between games both boys and girls participated in a 3-point shooting contest. Peabody’s Kiera Hill won the girls contest while Humboldt’s Trey Ward won the boys 3-point contest. The dunk contest brought the audience on their feet with several boys showing off. Humboldt’s Anthony Jones made it clear from the first dunk he wanted that title throwing down a thunderous one-handed dunk.
West 105, East 80
Neither team let up in the second period with both teams scoring in the 20’s. West continued to maintain the lead through the period and led 51-47 at the half. Humboldt’s Anthony Jones and Trey Ward paced the East team with 18 and 17 points respectively. Humboldt’s R.J. Abernathy and McKenzie’s Ben Austin led the West team at half with 15 and 12 points respectively.
The third period was close with West outscoring East 19-18 to hold a slim 66-63 lead headed into the fourth period. West exploded in the fourth period scoring 39 behind the hot hand of Abernathy with 13 points and Middleton’s Kentavious Berry who scored 11 during the period. East managed 17 points for a 105-80 final.
The West squad had five in double figures with three of them scoring over 20 points each led by Humboldt’s R.J. Abernathy with 28 points and was named Outstanding Player of the Game, McKenzie’s Ben Austin had 23 points and 14 rebounds while Middleton’s Kentavious Berry had 21 points. Lake County’s Jaylen Bradshaw added 13 along with Bradford’s Phenix Street with 12 points. Gibson County’s Jarvis Myers and Humboldt’s Trent Green chipped in 6 and 5 points respectively.
The East team was led by a pair from Humboldt; Anthony Jones with 29 points and 14 rebounds and Trey Ward with 28 points. Huntingdon’s Kaleel Bailey was also in double figures with 11 points. South Fulton’s Dashun Bradshaw and Lake County’s Shaeron Blevins chipped in 6 points and 4 points respectively.
