Rotary Hears About Asian Carp Problem

Posted

McKENZIE – April 9 – Tim Broadbent, Regional Fisheries Manager for the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, spoke to the McKenzie Rotary Club concerning the Asian carp problem in many Tennessee waters.
The fish competes for food with smaller fish. It is dangerous to boaters because the fish jumps from the water when it is disturbed.
TWRA is using several methods to reduce the fish's population including paying commercial fishermen to harvest the species. Fishing tournaments are also being conducted to reduce the population.

TWRA tags several of the fish to monitor their travels and habits. The fish have been able to pass through locks at dams as boats enter and exit.
Broadbent was the program guest of Rotarian Clark Brown.
