NASHVILLE (January 15) — State Senator John Stevens (R-Huntingdon) has been reappointed First Vice Chairman of the Senate Finance, Ways and Means (FWM) Committee. The announcement was made by Lt. Governor Randy McNally during the General Assembly’s 2019 organizational session, which is scheduled to conclude later this week.
Stevens was also reappointed as chairman of the committee’s powerful Appropriations Subcommittee by FWM Chairman Bo Watson (R-Hixson).
“Our appropriations subcommittee is where the rubber meets the road in the budget process,” said Lt. Gov. McNally. “As chair, it is imperative we have a strong, conservative leader who will put Tennessee’s fiscal health above all other considerations. John Stevens is such a leader. John understands the importance of fiscal discipline and fights vigorously to maintain it. He has done an outstanding job in the last two years in this position. I am grateful he will continue to serve the Senate and the state in this capacity.”

“Senator Stevens has been an outstanding chairman of this subcommittee, which is crucial to our budget process,” said Chairman Watson. “He has a sharp budgetary mind and fierce commitment to ensuring construction of a state budget that best serves the people of Tennessee and keeps our finances ranked among the top in the nation. I appreciate that he has agreed to continue in this vital role.”
The Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee has the responsibility of considering all measures dealing with the appropriation of state funds and has oversight regarding legislation pertaining to bonds, pensions, investments or indebtedness. The committee is generally made up of the Senate’s top leadership or other members with seniority or expertise in finance. The Appropriations Subcommittee is responsible for approval of all legislation that has a fiscal impact to the state’s budget.
Stevens was also appointed as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee. The Senate Judiciary Committee is responsible for hearing all bills dealing with civil laws, criminal laws, judicial proceedings, apportionment of elected officials and governing bodies and all matters relating to the courts, as well as law enforcement. The Senate Transportation and Safety Committee has jurisdiction over legislation regarding highways, roads and bridges and all forms of transportation in Tennessee, as well as the Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
The Senate will meet for the first day of the regular legislative session after the inauguration of Governor-Elect Bill Lee on Saturday.
