UNION CITY (July 1) — McKenzie High School Principal Tim Watkins was elected as the new director of schools for Obion County. His service begins July 15 at the school system, based in Union City.
Watkins, a 1988 graduate of McKenzie High School, had high regard for the educators and administrators in McKenzie Special School District. During his ten years of service as MHS principal he said he was truly blessed to work with outstanding teachers.
“I am better at what I do because of what I learned at McKenzie,” said Watkins. “I love McKenzie and it will always be home to me.”
He added that he learned a great deal from his predecessor Mr. Terry Howell, who served as a mentor. He praised his older brother, Lynn, who is the school director of schools, for being a good administrator. He also praised the educators with whom he worked.

“McKenzie has an outstanding group of teachers. McKenzie is blessed to have them,” said Watkins. He noted he learned a great deal from faculty members.
Watkins graduated from McKenzie High School in 1988, earned his undergraduate degree from UT-Martin, and a masters and an educational specialist degree in administration and supervision from Tennessee State University. He started his teaching and coaching career in Lewis County, where he served six years as middle school principal.
He and his wife, Sandy will soon move to Obion County. Their children, Macy graduated from MHS in 2015 and Murphy in 2019. Sandy works for the Department of Children Services in Paris and will transfer to the Union City office.
Watkins was selected from four finalists to earn the position. He replaces Dr. Leah Watkins, who is the new Henry County director of schools. Obion County has two high schools and five elementary schools.
