ATWOOD — West Carroll’s Board of Education met in their monthly session last Thursday, March 7, with no major items on their agenda but plenty of activity just the same.
The board approved continuation of the E-Rate Project process which helps fund the internet for the West Carroll School System. E-rate money is specifically available to school systems for internet connectivity costs and internal networking costs. Sheila Brawner advised that the system has qualified for an 80% percent reimbursement rate meaning the school only pays 20%. The current project will replace and add more network availability at the Jr/Sr. High School.
Board members approved the second reading of TSBA board policy updates to sections 1, 2, and 3 along with the first reading of board policy updates to section 4. They tabled action until next month on a board policy update regarding Tobacco Free Schools.

The board gave their approval on a number of upcoming student field trips. They approved the second reading on a trip for students participating in the HOSA competition and convention in Chattanooga later this month. The second reading for a trip to the 2019 Jr. Beta National Convention in Oklahoma City in June was approved. A field trip request to attend the FCCLA State Competition in Chattanooga later this month passed the second reading. West Carroll’s FFA group received approval to attend the Tennessee State FFA Convention in Gatlinburg later this month.
The school system principals spotlighted several persons and groups that are active in their respective schools. Primary school principal Jackie Wester spotlighted the Pre-K teachers and teacher assistants who work with young children getting them prepared for Kindergarten and beyond. Elementary school principal Tracy Foster spotlighted the Eagle Impact Team who recently competed in a competition in Milan and have qualified for state competition later this year. Junior High/Senior High principal Tim Stratton spotlighted Devin Nash and Shelby Browning who will represent West Carroll this year in the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame. He also announced three students; Braden Pounds, Kaitlyn Lane, and Lori Milsapps, who will be Governor’s school participants this year.
School Director Dexter Williams updated the board on the upcoming restroom renovations at the Jr/Sr High School which are set to begin the week of spring break which is the last full week of March. The plan is to have two of them completed before graduation in May.
