ATWOOD (November 1) — West Carroll’s School Board met in regular monthly session last Thursday taking action on a variety of items. Board members unanimously approved a $500 bonus for employees of the school system. The board approved a $15,351 bid from JM Roofing of Jackson to perform gutter and roof repairs to the Junior High/Senior High building. They also approved a request from school director Dexter Williams to purchase a storage building to go to the Junior High/Senior High school as long as the purchase includes the addition of a concrete pad for the building.
Several trips were approved for school groups. A trip to the High School Beta Club Convention was approved for November 14-18. An overnight trip request was approved for West Carroll’s Softball team to participate in a tournament in Columbia, Tenn. March 29 and 30. 2019. A trip to the FCCLA Cluster meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. November 9-11.
Board members approved the second reading of a board policy update regarding testing programs and tabled a request to add additional fencing to the backstop at the softball field to explore other options.
West Carroll Principal Tim Stratton told board members he got a phone call during October from the mother of a McKenzie student who got stranded and was assisted by a group of West Carroll students returning home from their game at Fulton City, Kentucky, including Celia Townsend, Thalia Townsend, CJ Ray, Makenya Gaskin, Trace Fuller, Luke Blankenship, Darrell Williams, Hunter Wadley, Dalton Harriott, PJ Odom, Jeremiah Bryant, and Cody Wilredge.
Dana Carey, director of special programs, told the board that the district’s Plan for Family Engagement needs to be updated and requested any information they could give on the existing plan and input on updating the plan.
Stratton also introduced West Carroll student Makenya Gasken who qualified to participate in the State Cross Country meet. He, along with other West Carroll principals, spotlighted their student interventionists. All of the principals indicated their interventionists go above and beyond in their jobs. They were Primary interventionist Brandi Tolley and Primary School counselor Debra Keeton, Elementary interventionist Lauren Hays, and Junior High Senior High interventionist Crystal Polinski. Director Dexter Williams spotlighted the school system bookkeepers who have been instrumental in West Carroll not having any adverse audit findings for two consecutive years.
