DRESDEN — The Lady War Eagles had chances to upset a short-handed Dresden squad Friday night but the Lady Lions shot the ball well turning a close game into a 58-37 win. The Lady Lions dressed only 7 players having lost two players for the year to knee injuries and had another one recovering from an illness.
In the first quarter, Dresden popped a couple of quick three’s to jump to a 10-3 lead in the first four minutes of the opening quarter. West Carroll settled down and outscored the Lady Lions the final four minutes of the quarter to make it a 16-12 Dresden lead at the end of one period.
The Lady War Eagles tied the game at 21 with a little over a minute left in the half before Dresden ended the half with an 8-0 run to lead 29-21 at the half.
Dresden came out the third quarter and opened up the lead to 33-25 in the first three minutes of the third period and had a double-digit lead by the end of the third period leading 41-28.
West Carroll got into foul trouble in the second half and also had trouble scoring in the fourth period managing just 9 points in the final period while the Lady Lions scored 17 to finish a 58-37 win.
Macey Cunningham led the Lady War Eagles with 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Katie Holt had 7 points while Tatum Keymon added 5. Gracie Cunningham, Octavia Jones, and Amaya Thompson all had 3 points apiece while Alyssa Butler chipped in 2 points.
Dresden’s Lady Lions had four in double figures led by Rachel Childress with 18 points. Katie Washburn, Jacey Mangiaracinia, and Carson Johson had 15, 12, and 11 points respectively. Jaiden Mangiaracinia chipped in 2.
West Carroll 46, Dresden 41
The boys contest was a little different with West Carroll jumping out in front early in the first period 7-2 before the Lions outscored the War Eagles in the last three minutes of the period to make it a 10-7 game at the end of one quarter.
The War Eagles got hot with a 13-3 run in the first five minutes of the second quarter building a 23-10 lead. They ended the first half with a 27-15 lead at the half.
The third period was a physical one with neither team scoring much but both teams getting after each other defensively. West Carroll maintained the lead 34-27 at the end of three periods.
The Lions made things interesting in the final period with a hot hand and forcing turnovers to cut the War Eagle lead to four. Dresden was forced to foul late in the period and West Carroll took care of business at the free throw line to preserve a 46-41 lead.
West Carroll had balanced scoring in the contest led by Dawson Hardwick with 11. Tyson Keymon, Aaron Heckert, and Zach Heckert all scored 7 points each. Jerimiah Bryant and Josh Clark added five points each while Luke Moore chipped in 4 for the War Eagles.
Dresden was led by Kaleb Dilday and Tyrone James with 12 and 11 points respectively. Divers Lockhart had 7 points with JB Newsom adding 3 points. Chandler Turnbow and Chase Edwards chipped in 2 points each.
