ATWOOD (August 3) — West Carroll Special School District is proactively addressing security issues at each of its three school sites in McLemoreville, Trezevant and Atwood. The Board voted to start the process to possibly make upgrades at each school. That action came during the August 3 meeting at the West Carroll Junior/Senior High School.

McKENZIE (AUGUST 1) — New state laws affecting education necessitated numerous changes in local school board policy. During the August 1 meeting, the McKenzie Special School District Board of Education approved those changes, some of which included school safety, summer school, intruder drill policy, a public comment policy at meetings, and penalties for unruly spectators or coaches at sporting events.

MURFREESBORO — Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) congratulated over 2,650 students graduating at the spring 2023 commencement ceremonies on May 5 and 6. Six students from Carroll, Henry, and Weakley counties received degrees from MTSU’s two-day commencement event.

MARTIN (July 18) — Several Carroll County students were awarded scholarships to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin for the 2023-24 academic year, according to Dr. James Mantooth, executive director, Office of Enrollment Services and Student Engagement. Some students awarded are incoming freshmen, and some are returning students.

2023 is a year of firsts for Renee Sutton. After concluding year 18 of teaching at Camden Central High School, Sutton is taking an administrative leap at Carroll Academy in Huntingdon. NASHVILLE (July 18) — The Tennessee Department of Education released the 2022-23 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) district-level results, following the release of the state-level results last month. The results include high school Fall 2022 end-of-course (EOC) exams and Spring 2023 exams in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies. The data is presented by subject, grade and student group, and district.

McKenzie Middle School made minor updates to the dress code for the 2023-24 school year, allowing compression pants to be worn if the bottom is completely covered.

Administration made a few changes to the policy for the 2023-24 school year, adding more leniency to device usage while still protecting students from inappropriate use.
