NASHVILLE — New data released by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development showed unemployment rates increased slightly during May in each of the state’s counties. Even with the minimal increases, 93 of Tennessee’s 95 counties maintained rates lower than 5% for the month. more
McKENZIE (June 29) — A 100-foot tall tree was removed from the downtown Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday, June 29. The tree was heavily damaged and rotten in much of the top. more

HUNTINGDON (June 30) — Carroll County Electric Department Board of Directors held its first meeting under new general manager, Ryan Drewry. It marks the first change in leadership since July 1, 2014, when immediate past manager Danny Brawner was selected to lead the utility. more
CLARKSBURG (June 27) — Clarksburg’s Mayor and Aldermen approved the city’s 2022-23 budget at a regular meeting Monday night and received an update on the construction at City Hall by Mayor Howell Wayne Todd. more
HUNTINGDON (June 28) — The 2022-23 fiscal year budget for the Town of Huntingdon was delayed due to “extenuating circumstances” caused by the budgets of the Carroll County Watershed Authority and the town being associated. The Watershed is selling the Carroll County 1000-Acre Lake to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. That transfer has not been completed but is anticipated in July. more
The Board of Directors of Northwest Tenn. Economic Development Council recently appointed Mrs. Cheryl Oglesby-Townes as the executive director of Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Council located in Dresden. Northwest Tenn. Economic Development Council is the local Community Action Agency in Northwest Tennessee serving the counties of Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dyer, Gibson, Henry, Lake, Obion and Weakley counties. more
CARROLL COUNTY — Carroll County 1000-Acre Recreational Lake is now owned by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. That transfer of ownership occurred on July 1 with an intragovernment transfer of assets from the Carroll County Watershed Authority, a state agency to TWRA, another state agency. more
McLEMORESVILLE (July 4) — A long-standing tradition continued in McLemoresville on July 4 in downtown. The events started with a parade, starting at the McLemoresville Baptist Church and traveling a short distance to downtown. Temperatures were in the upper 90s, but that did not deter the spectators. more
McKENZIE (July 4) — On an extremely hot summer day, the greater McKenzie community celebrated July 4 with concessions, music and fireworks at McKenzie City Park. The annual tradition started in the 1980s and has become an annual must-attend event. more
A few months back, I came across a Facebook post about “Weakley County’s notorious gangster of the 1940s.” I had never heard of Earl David Birchem, but his crime spree and subsequent capture were very intriguing. There are three upcoming statewide sales tax holidays in July and August 2022. This year, the Tennessee General Assembly approved two sales tax holidays in addition to the traditional summer sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies, and computers. more
NASHVILLE — Under a new state law, the Tennessee General Assembly has waived state registration fees for Class A and Class B motor vehicles, for renewals after July 1, 2022 and before June 30, 2023. more
McKENZIE (JUNE 21) — More than 100 persons attended the first-ever McKenzie Chamber of Commerce banquet on Tuesday, June 21 at The Venue at Waddell Place in McKenzie. The Chamber has more than 100 members in its inaugural year. Monica Heath serves as the executive director of the newly former McKenzie Chamber of Commerce and Industry. more
MOBILE, Alabama (June 26) — The Senior Bowl inducted five new members into the game’s Hall of Fame — former New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk, current Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Von Miller, current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, and former San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Patrick Willis. Along with the Hall of Fame inductees, the Senior Bowl has chosen Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey as 2021 Rookie of the Year. The recipients were honored in the annual induction ceremony sponsored by Spire at The Grand Hotel Golf Club & Spa in Point Clear, Alabama on Sunday, June 26, 2022. more
Monday, June 20 was the first day citizens could file petitions to run for office in the November 8 local municipal election. All prospective candidates must file a petition before Thursday, August 18 at noon to qualify. The withdrawal deadline is Thursday, August 25 by noon. more
