MEMPHIS (June 20) — The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook continuing until Sunday due to the elevated temperatures and high humidity in the forecast. The NWS also warns of elevated fire risk in the area this week. Heat Advisories may become necessary again as heat indices approach or exceed 105 degrees each day beginning Tuesday. more
ATLANTA, Ga. (June 18) — On Friday and Saturday, another milestone was achieved in the COVID-19 vaccine race. Eighteen months after the first COVID-19 vaccine was approved for emergency use authorization (EUA) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle P. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., endorsed the recommendation that all children 6 months through 5 years of age should receive a COVID-19 vaccine. more

During the bicentennial celebration in Huntingdon, the story of a Korean War-era military plane crash came to my attention. The Colonial Tea Room displayed a piece of the wreckage that had landed on its roof from the 1954 incident. McKENZIE (June 9) — Two individuals arrested in May were arrested again June 9 following a search warrant at the same residence in McKenzie. The arrests came as a result of a joint investigation into illegal drug activity by special agents with the Drug Investigation Division of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, McKenzie Police Department, Huntingdon Police Department, and the 24th Judicial Drug Task Force. more

CARROLL COUNTY — Carroll County Commissioners convene on Monday, June 20 to vote on the $13.8 million 2022-2023 fiscal year budget and amend the 2021-22 budget during this final month of the fiscal year. more
Voters across Tennessee will go to the polls on August 4 to elect candidates to various offices. In Carroll County, the general election includes all county offices and all school board offices, along with primaries in state representatives, governor, and U.S. Congress. more
McKENZIE (June 7) — A new multi-purpose building and pay raises for teachers and other staff are represented in the proposed 2022-23 fiscal year budget of the McKenzie Special School District (MSSD). The local Board of Education convened in a budget workshop to discuss the details of the proposed $15.97 million budget. more
McKENZIE (June 9) — City officials and department supervisors met at McKenzie City Hall on 2470 Cedar Street for the June meeting of the McKenzie Board of Mayor and Council. At the meeting, Council members approved a proposal to purchase a new firetruck for the City of McKenzie Fire Department, and Mayor Jill Holland delivered the first of two hearings of the amended budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022 and ending June 30, 2023. more

CARROLL COUNTY — Paralympic athletes Kirsten Sass and Amy Dixon coached the No Sight No Limits triathlon camp in Carroll County, June 11 and 12. Amy Dixon, an elite blind paratriathlete and 8-time World Triathlon gold medalist, founded Camp No Sight No Limits in 2017 to help visually-impaired athletes and guides train for future competitions. more

Congress has an opportunity to pass legislation that benefits all local citizens, businesses and even protects our democracy. The Local Journalism Sustainability Act, LJSA for short, should be included as part of any upcoming reconciliation bill that Congress is considering. The LJSA is a well-thought-out bill that would provide needed support to local news organizations, including local newspapers, to ensure their viability as they continue to make progress toward a digital future. more
