Candidates Can Pick Up Petitions to Seek Office in 2022

TENNESSEE — The 2022 election cycle has begun. On Monday, December 20, 2021, candidates began picking up petitions to seek office for certain offices.

The Carroll County Election Commission released the following information.

“At the official request by the county political parties, the Commissioners of Elections for Carroll County, Tennessee, have called the Republican and Democratic State Judicial District 24 and County Primary Elections to be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. The purpose of this primary election is to submit to qualified, registered voters of Carroll County the candidates for the following offices, which include *school boards: Circuit Court Judge(s), Chancellor, Criminal Court Judge(s), District Attorney General, Public Defender, County Mayor, County Commissioner(s), Assessor of Property, Trustee, General Sessions/Juvenile Judge, Sheriff, Circuit Court Clerk, County Clerk, Register of Deeds, Road Supervisor(s), County School Board and Special School Districts, where staggered terms are open.

“A newly adopted 2021 law allows for partisan school board elections. A candidate for a school board is not required to run partisan, (s)he may still choose to run as an Independent.

“If you would like to run for an office, one predominant step to qualifying is the nominating petition process. Pick up a petition from your county election office. Get signatures from 25 registered voters eligible to vote for the office. Then, return the petition by February 17, 2022, noon. This filing deadline is for partisan and independent candidates. If you want to run for office as a Republican or Democratic candidate and you qualify, your name will be on the May 3rd ballot. If you win that primary election, your name will advance to the August 4, 2022, County General Election ballot. A qualified independent candidate, although having the same filing deadline as a partisan candidate, will only appear on the August 4th ballot.

“If interested, come to the Carroll County Election Office with your questions and concerns. We will help you understand the election process. Our regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The office is located at 625 High St., Suite 113, Huntingdon,” concluded the message from the Election Commission.

The deadline to register to vote is Monday, April 4.

Early Voting Period is April 13 to Thursday, April 28 for the May 3 primary for state and county elections.

The General Election is Thursday, August 4 for state and county elections.

State and Federal primaries are on a slightly different time schedule.

Primary — Candidates for State Representatives, State Senator candidates can pick up petitions on Monday, February 7 to seek office with a qualifying deadline of Thursday, April 7 at noon.

Voter registration deadline for the August 4 elections, federal primaries and general elections, is July 5. Early voting is July 15 to July 30. The primary is August 4.
