Candidates Qualify for November City Elections in Carroll County

McKenzie, Atwood, and Bruceton Have Competitive Mayor’s Races

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. (August 18) — McKenzie, Atwood and Bruceton will have competitive races for city mayor during the November 8 election. The names of candidates for municipal elections throughout the county were released Thursday, August 18 following the noon qualifying deadline.
Peg Hamlett, administrators of elections, said she was pleased to see so many candidates seeking office. Win or lose, she said it’s nice to see candidates qualifying and seeking office. She was speaking to the Carroll County Election Commission members, who earlier certified the August 2 election results.
In the city of McKenzie, voters will elect five offices: one city mayor, three councilpersons at-large for a four-year term, and one councilperson at-large for a two-year unexpired term.
McKENZIE —In McKenzie’s mayoral race, Ryan D. Griffin and Jill Holland are qualified candidates. Josh Filtz’s qualified but chose to withdraw from the competition. Filtz’s candidacy was contested by Laura Keeton, the attorney for the City of McKenzie based on the premise Filtz did not actually reside in McKenzie. Filtz said he does reside in McKenzie, but decided not to involve himself in the planned formal hearings concerning the challenge to his candidacy.
Carol Jean Armpriest and Tom Alexander, Bobby Young and Gerald Merchant qualified for City of McKenzie Councilman At-Large for a four-year term. Josafina Batton is seeking the two-year unexpired term. This is the first election for McKenzie since eliminating the geographic wards and instead changing to citywide, at-large, candidacy and voting.
ATWOOD —Atwood has four mayoral candidates. Fridie Algee, Jr., Mike Tolley, Taylor Coulter and Ricky Long have all qualified. Mayor James Halford is not seeking reelection.
Two aldermen will be elected from a field of three candidates, including Christopher James Cannon, Jimmy W. Lewis and Randall D. Long.
McLEMORESVILLE — In McLemoresville, voters will elect one mayor and five alderman, all for four-year terms.
Phil Williams, who has served as the city’s mayor for 45 years, is uncontested in his race for reelection.
Sharron Holland, Don T. Reed, John Thomas Newsome, Jr., Angie Martin, and Lana Suite are the candidates for the five aldermen positions.
Voters in Atwood will elect one mayor and two aldermen, all for four-year terms.
Qualifying mayoral candidates are Fridie Algee, Jr., Mike Tolley,  Taylor Coulter and Ricky Long.

Qualifying for the aldermen seats are Jim Lewis and Randy Long.
BRUCETON — In Bruceton, voters will elect one mayor and two aldermen.
Robert T. Keeton, III and Dallas R. Wade are both vying for mayor of Bruceton.
James A. Butler Jack R. Blocker are running for alderman.
HOLLOW ROCK — In the town of Hollow Rock, voters will elect one mayor, three aldermen for a four-year term, and an alderman for a two-year unexpired term.
Bobby Brotherton is the lone candidate for mayor.
Angela Stockdale and Zachary Clement are the two who qualified with two additional seats without candidates for Town of Hollow Rock Alderman.
HUNTINGDON — Huntingdon voters will elect three four-year council members and one council member with a two-year unexpired term.
Kelly B. Eubanks, Will Atkins (2-year), Andrew Maddox, and John Sanders have obtained a petition for Town of Huntingdon Council Member.
TREZEVANT — In Trezevant, voters will elect two four-year aldermen and one alderman for a two-year unexpired term.

CLARKSBURG - The lone other city in the county is Clarksburg. The municipality held its election in August.Aditionally state representative, governor, and Congressional candidates along with Tennessee Constitutional amendments will be on the ballot.
The voter registration deadline for the November 8 election is October 11, and the absentee deadline is November 1. Early voting is October 19 through November 3.
