CARROLL COUNTY (April 3) — Twelve high school seniors from Carroll County were recognized by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce for their academic excellence by scoring a 29 or better on the national ACT test. The Carroll County Chamber hosted a luncheon on April 3 at Mallard’s Restaurant to honor these students.

“These students are in the top nine percent in the nation of all the students who took the ACT exam,” said Brad Hurley, Chamber President. “Their academic excellence is exemplary, and the expectations for these young women and men are extremely high.”

Leah Atkins, Jacob Beaty, John Carlin Crouse, Megan Foster, David Matthew Garriott, Bailee Jernigan, Ty Kelley, Jacob Nathanael King, Jenna Magee, Nathan Keith Price, Keller Smith, and Xander Walker make up the eleventh group of students to be selected for the Chamber’s ACT Wall of Honor. The Wall was created in 2013, and a total of 140 students have been recognized by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce for their academic achievement.

The honorees and school administrators gathered at Mallard’s Restaurant for the brief ceremony.

“It is my honor to welcome you to the 2023 Carroll County Chamber of Commerce ACT Luncheon. Thank you for your presence and your help in celebrating the achievements of twelve exemplary young people who have proven their commitment to excellence,” said Brad Hurley, president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

“Recognizing the very key role that education plays in improving the quality of life for every individual, the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors agreed in 2013 that it was important to recognize the accomplishments of young people for their academic excellence. Therefore, in the lobby of the Chamber building is a board that holds the name of every student who has been honored at the ACT Luncheon; this is the Chamber’s Wall of Honor. After today’s event, the Chamber will have acknowledged 140 students for their scholastic performance. Today we are recognizing twelve graduating seniors who have achieved a score of 29 or higher on the national ACT exam.”

“However, each of you plays an important role in the education of this year’s honorees, and, on behalf of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, let me thank you for your attendance. Recognizing individuals for excellence is an important role for the Chamber, and today we acknowledge the Chamber’s ACT Wall of Honor Class of 2023. Each member of the 2023 class has scored 29 or higher on the national ACT exam- a score that places them in the top 9% in the nation among those who took the ACT.

“The Chamber would be remiss if we didn’t take a moment to thank all the women and men who are working in our schools. I know that each one of them is bursting with pride for these students.

“I would challenge these seniors to take their final days in high school to thank their teachers, administrators, and staff for having a positive impact upon their lives

“The Chamber’s board and its membership are proud of these young women and men for striving to attain excellence,” said Cliff Sturdivant, board chairman of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. “These students have set high standards for themselves, and we know that, by keeping their standards high, they will be successful in every endeavor they undertake.”

The American College Testing (ACT) is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admission.

This 60-year-old test consists of four concentrations: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning, with an optional writing component.

The main four tests are scored individually on a scale of 1 to 36, and a composite score is provided, which is the whole number average of the four scores

“By recognizing these outstanding students, the Chamber acknowledges the great job our school teachers, administration, and staff are doing every day in our schools,” said Brad Hurley, President of the Carroll County Chamber. “We know they are positively impacting the lives of our young people.”

In addition to the Chamber ACT Wall of Honor, the Chamber has established the STEM Inspire Program to help young people be exposed to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Celebrity waiters for the event were Andrew Maddox, Jacob Smothers, Brian Winston.

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1981 for the purpose of advancing the commercial, industrial, civic and general interests of the County of Carroll and its trade area.
