Farmers' Market News

Posted

The McKenzie Farmers’ Market continues to have an increasing number of customers and vendors each Saturday and Tuesday. Last Saturday, over 320 customers and 17 vendors were there. Some of our regular vendors were out on vacation and we are looking forward to getting them back. We have fewer numbers on Tuesdays, but our great produce vendors continue to bring in customers on Tuesday afternoons. You want to be sure to check the parking lot out during the week because many times, some of our seasonal vendors will set up through the weekdays.

Many of you have asked about honey, and we are told we should have honey a little later in the season. However, you may want to save the date for August 28 at 10 a.m. when Randy McCadams will host a beekeeping workshop. Randy will teach us all about how to become a beekeeper, and then we can take those skills and harvest our own honey. We know honey grown in the area we live has many medicinal uses, including a great remedy for those who have allergies to the pollen and plants we are exposed to.

Our community should be proud of the creativity of our children. Our youth who entered the 4-H Fruit and Vegetable Race Car Derby, had some of the most creative and interesting race cars imaginable- made only with fruits, vegetables and toothpicks. They raced their cars down an inclined track and marked the distances their cars ran for first, second and third place.

We are told by our customers that we have some of the best vendors in West Tennessee, not only do they have a large variety of the freshest produce, as they continue to bring in corn, tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, peppers, beans, peas, and squash, but they also have delicious breads, pies, cookies, jams, jellies and beautiful and creative crafts such as baskets, woven rugs, crocheted items, and paintings. They also have free range eggs and antibiotic- and chemical-free beef. And to top it off, we are told our customers love the friendly welcoming nature of our vendors.

We welcome all of you to visit us at the McKenzie Farmers’ Market. It’s a great place to stock up on healthy and delicious produce and baked goods, purchase gifts, and visit old friends and meet new ones.

The market is open Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon and Tuesdays, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
