Huntingdon Middle Hands Rebels First Loss

Posted
The anticipated battle between 4-0 McKenzie and 4-1 Huntingdon turned into a lopsided affair full of penalties with the Mustangs going home with a 38-14 win.

The Mustangs won the toss and elected to take the ball first and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with Kylen Turner going 52 yards on first down to score with 7:41 left in opening quarter.  The two-point conversion attempt was no good for a 6-0 Mustang lead.

After forcing the Rebels to punt on their first possession, Huntingdon struck again on a 5-play drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown by Kenton Smith with 4:20 to play in the first quarter.  The two-point conversion was good for a 14-0 Mustang lead.

McKenzie’s second possession resulted in a blocked punt by Zayden Connelly giving Huntingdon possession at the Rebel 9-yard line.  Two plays later, Smith got his second TD of the night on a nine-yard run with just over a minute left in the first quarter.  The two-point conversion attempt was no good but Huntingdon increased their lead to 20-0.

The Rebels took their next possession into the second quarter and got a drive going that resulted in a 11-yard touchdown by Cole Brown with 6:45 left in the second quarter.  McKenzie connected on a 2-point conversion pass that made the score 20-8.  The Mustangs answered that touchdown with another one of their own with Kylen Turner scoring on a 21-yard run with 5:50 left in the half.  The 2-point conversion attempt was no good with the score becoming 26-8.

The Rebels were forced to punt on their next possession with Kenton Smith taking the punt return 70 yards for another Mustang score.  The two-point conversion attempt was no good with the score 32-8.  McKenzie went three and out punting back to the Mustangs with a little over a minute left until halftime.  Three plays later, Huntingdon’s Smith went 40 yards for a score with the 2-point conversion no good to lead 38-8 with just seconds left until the half.

The third quarter saw both teams swap possessions the entire quarter and into the fourth quarter.  Late in the game, McKenzie’s Jacobi Melton scored on a 4-yard touchdown with the 2-point conversion no good as the game came to an end shortly afterward.

Both teams will be in action on Thursday, September 22 with McKenzie traveling to Gibson County and Huntingdon closing out their season at home against Decatur County.
