Mustangs Claim Second State Championship

MURFREESBORO (January 28) — For the second time in school history, the Huntingdon Middle School Mustangs have claimed a state basketball championship. The Mustangs battled Thurman Francis Middle School in a 55-26 championship win in the James C. Haile State Basketball Tournament.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs took a tremendous 26-7 lead over Thurman, cruising to victory over the next three-quarters of play. Kenton Smith scored 13 of the 26 points in the quarter. Smith would finish the game with 27 points and all-tournament honors. Other Huntingdon making all-tournament distinction Bryson Holladay and Kylen Turner.

En route to the championship, Huntingdon defeated Rickman (44-27) and Columbia Academy (29-27). The Mustangs finish the season with a 19-3 record which includes a county championship title. The Middle School Mustangs are led by Macon Bulluck, head coach, and assistant Taylor McCarty.
