Huntingdon Finishes Strong with Union City Win

HUNTINGDON (October 29) — The Huntingdon Mustangs had a big win Friday night defeating the Union City Golden Tornadoes 48-14. The Mustangs and Tornadoes played for second place in Region 7-2A and the opportunity to host the first round of the TSSAA Playoffs.

The Mustangs ran the ball 37 times for 328 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior running back Cade Wood dominated the opening half, by night’s end he picked up five touchdowns with 11 carries for 156 yards. Aden Hutcherson had 17 carries for 71 yards. Junior Landon Gordon carried the ball two times for 35 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Gray Eubanks had three carries for 54 yards and one touchdown.

Eubanks was two of five passing for 35 yards. Blane Fields and Blake Reeves were the receivers.

Defensively, the sophomore C.J. Pelonero and Reeves had nine solo tackles followed by Wood with six. Wood and Seth Hughes recorded two sacks and Reeves with one.

Huntingdon easily handled Union City racking up 35 unanswered points in the first half. The Golden Tornadoes adjusted their offensive strategy the second half, but the damage was already done as Union City outscored Huntingdon 14-13 in the second half. The final score on senior night was 48-14. The Mustangs finished the regular season 8-2 with wins against Jackson South Side, Camden, Riverside, Houston County, Milan, Gibson County, Trenton Peabody and Union City. Their two losses were to McKenzie and Westview. Huntingdon will prepare for Memphis Mitchell (8-2) next Friday night. The winner will play the winner of Camden (3-6) and Memphis Academy of Health Sciences (9-1).
