The MMS Lady Rebels and Rebels traveled to Huntingdon last Thursday, October 28 for their second contest against a county opponent.

Huntingdon opened their season on October 16 at the Gleason Jamboree winning both of their contests. The Fillies nipped Greenfield 42-40 in overtime while the Mustangs won handily over Milan Middle 35-14. They traveled to Jackson Christian two days later, on October 18, splitting the two contests. The Fillies won 44-37 and the Mustangs suffered a 40-33 loss. Their first home game, on October 25, saw a pair of wins over Camden with the Fillies winning a close one 32-26 and the Mustangs winning 60-31. The next night, on October 26, they traveled to Clarksburg winning a pair of lopsided victories. The Fillies won 44-7 with the Mustangs winning 51-16.

The girls contest featured a pair of unbeatens and was close for much of the game.

Huntingdon opened up an early 7-2 lead in the first period until McKenzie closed it to 7-5 and it remained close for the remainder of the period with the Fillies leading 13-12 at the end. It stayed close until the Fillies pulled ahead 21-14 midway through the period and led 27-17 at halftime.

Jaycee Stafford and Sarah Luci led the Lady Rebels with nine and eight first-half points respectively while Knox Bennett led the Filles with 11 points.

McKenzie closed the gap to 27-21 early in the third period but Huntingdon was able to maintain a comfortable 36-29 lead at the end of the period. They made it a double-digit contest late in the fourth period to secure the win.

Stafford and Luci led McKenzie’s scoring with 13 and 12 points respectively. Charli Weatherford added five points. Morgan Little and Madeline Gotshall chipped in three and two points each.

Mary Kendall Stevens and Meridith Perrit led Huntingdon scorers with 12 points each while Knox Bennett finished with 11 points. Kelcey Stephenson and Tatianna Whiteside added six and five points respectively.

The Lady Rebels fall to 3-1 while the Fillies remain unbeaten at 5-0.

Mustangs 55, Rebels 22
What started out as a close boy’s game turned into a rout due to McKenzie’s shooting going ice cold for three of the four periods. The first period was close with Huntingdon leading 14-13 but that’s as close as it would get. The Mustangs opened an 18-13 lead halfway through the second period and led 27-16 at the half.

Huntingdon’s Caleb Ezell led all scorers with 17 first-half points including 3 three-pointers. Eli Vinson, Luke Toombs, and Nolan Fawcett led the Rebel scoring.

McKenzie’s shooting woes got worse in the second half as Huntingdon started with four unanswered baskets to start the third period on the way to a 47-19 lead. Both teams substituted a number of players in the final period as the Mustangs notched the win.

The Rebels dropped to 1-3 and the Mustangs improved to 4-1 on the season.

The scoring for the Rebels was balanced despite the shooting issues. Vinson led the way with five points while Toombs had four points. Fawcett and Jacobi Melton had three points each. Fletcher Holt, Khamari Coleman, and Cole Brown had two points each while Ethan Bradberry chipped in one point for the Rebels.

McKenzie hits the road for a pair of games on Nov. 1 and 2 and hosts Clarksburg on November 4. Huntingdon travels to Dresden and hosts Lakewood to start November and travels to West Carroll on November 4.
